NYPD Officer Who Fatally Choked Eric Garner Wasn't Indicted, Man Who Filmed the Incident Was

On the same day one grand jury decided not to indict officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who was killed after being put in a chokehold last July, a different jury did indict 22-year-old Ramsey Orta, the man who captured Garner's death on camera.

Orta was charged with weapon possession after being arrested on Aug. 2, less than one month after taping Garner's confrontation with police. As seen in Orta's video, several NYPD officers confront Garner on the street for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. They're then seen bringing Garner to the ground, as Pantaleo places Garner in a chokehold.

According to an SILive.com report, Orta told the Staten Island court that he's being framed by police for capturing Garner's death.

“When they searched me, they didn't find nothing on me,” Orta said after his arrest. “And the same cop that searched me, he told me clearly himself, that karma's a bitch, what goes around comes around.”

The Oil-Drenched Black Swan, Part 2: The Financialization of Oil

All the analysts chortling over the "equivalent of a tax break" for consumers are about to be buried by an avalanche of defaults and crushing losses as the chickens of financializing oil come home to roost.

The pundits crowing about the stimulus effect of lower oil prices on consumers are missing the real story, which is the financialization of oil. Financialization is another word that is often bandied about without the benefit of a definition.
Here is my definition:

Financialization is the mass commodification of debt and debt-based financial instruments collaterized by previously low-risk assets, a pyramiding of risk and speculative gains that is only possible in a massive expansion of low-cost credit and leverage.

That is a mouthful, so let's break it into bite-sized chunks.

Home mortgages are a good example of how financialization increases financial profits by jacking up risk and distributing it to suckers who don't recognize the potential for collapse and staggering losses.

In the good old days, home mortgages were safe and dull: banks and savings and loans issued the mortgages and kept the loans on their books, earning a stable return for the 30 years of the mortgage's term.

Then the financialization machine appeared on the horizon and revolutionized the home mortgage business to increase profits. The first step was to generate entire new families of mortgages with higher profit margins than conventional mortgages. These included no-down payment mortgages (liar loans), no-interest-for-the-first-few-years mortgages, adjustable-rate mortgages, home equity lines of credit, and so on.

This broadening of options and risks greatly expanded the pool of people who qualified for a mortgage. In the old days, only those with sterling credit qualified for a home mortgage. In the financialized realm, almost anyone with a pulse could qualify for one exotic mortgage or another.

The interest rate, risk and profit margins were all much higher for the originators. What's not to like? Well, the risk of default is a problem. Defaults trigger losses.

Monday Was The Biggest Day Ever For Online Spending

Cyber Monday online sales reached $2 billion this year, up 17 percent from last year's Cyber Monday, according to Reston, Va., Internet tracking firm comScore Inc.

It was the heaviest online spending day in history, and the only day to ever surpass $2 billion in sales, comScore (NASDAQ: SCOR) says.

Its data indicates the weekend after Thanksgiving also reached a milestone, with the first-ever billion-dollar shopping day on a Saturday. Online sales Sunday fell just short of $1 billion.

Another Ponzi Roll Over of Treasury Debt

Apathy allows masters of debt created money system to rule

As the holiday season draws nearer, it is nice to know that a present for all Americans and future generations is building as the hordes of consumers’ storm the aisles of their favorite box store so that they can go further in debt.

Much like maxing out your plastic limits and paying the monthly minimum, the U.S. Treasury just keeps rolling over their debt since their credit card has no ceiling. The banksters behind the Federal Reserve have no problem with monetizing the national debt, since the Treasury provides their stamp of guarantee. As the public sector continues their spending spree, few really know the extent and amount of their share of the obligation.

Terence P. Jeffrey writes in the CNS News article, Treasury Issues $1T in New Debt in 8 Weeks—To Pay Old Debt.

“The Daily Treasury Statement that was released Wednesday afternoon as Americans were preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving revealed that the U.S. Treasury has been forced to issue $1,040,965,000,000 in new debt since fiscal 2015 started just eight weeks ago in order to raise the money to pay off Treasury securities that were maturing and to cover new deficit spending by the government.”

Muzzleloader Deer Season to Reopen December 20

The second portion of Maryland’s muzzleloader deer season begins on Saturday, December 20 and runs through January 3, 2015. Hunters who possess a valid Maryland hunting license and a Muzzleloader Stamp, or are exempt from the hunting license requirements, may use muzzleloading firearms to hunt white-tailed and sika deer during this season.
The bag limits for the season are:

  • Statewide: One antlered white-tailed deer.
  • Region A: On private land, one antlerless deer January 1 through 3. On public land, one antlerless deer on January 3. New this year, hunters may only take two antlerless deer total for the license year.
  • Region B: Ten antlerless white-tailed deer. A hunter may take one bonus antlered white-tailed deer per year, but only after taking two antlerless white-tailed deer during any season and (before taking a second antlered deer) purchasing a Bonus Antlered Deer Stamp. Three sika deer, no more than one antlered.

Gowdy Approaches Benghazi Minefield

Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Wood was the commander of the 16-man Special Forces security detail at the U.S. embassy in Tripoli, Libya, until the State Department ordered him and his men home on August 5, 2012 and never replaced them.

Despite repeated pleas from Ambassador Chris Stevens and his State Department security officers in Tripoli that they remain in Libya, Washington wouldn’t listen.

Colonel Wood remains perplexed at what happened on the night Ambassador Stevens was murdered, and in a recent conversation, recalled a similar event in June 2012 when the British ambassador came under RPG attack while visiting Benghazi.

“When I went to help the British ambassador, we got to the scene faster than the CIA team did on September 11. I went over to the CIA Annex, waited for the 18 Delta medic to grab his kit, then left immediately,” he told me.

“Why would they say ‘get over there as quick as you can’ when the British ambassador gets attacked, and say ‘wait’ when it’s our own ambassador?” he wondered.

And yet, that’s the behavior former deputy CIA Director Mike Morell told the House intelligence committee was “a very prudent decision.”

Their report was welcomed by the national media as the final nail in the coffin of Republican-led Congressional investigations.

GOP opposes amnesty ‘because Obama is black’

Gowdy blasts witness for accusation of racial motive

WASHINGTON –
U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., vehemently scolded a congressional witness for suggesting Republicans opposed President Obama’s amnesty order because he is black.

In an answer to a question from a Democrat earlier in the Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday on the legality of Obama’s amnesty order, Marielena Hincapie, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, claimed Congress is treating Obama differently than other presidents because he is the first black chief executive.

When it came time for his questioning, Gowdy asked Hincapie, “You suggested race was the basis for why we may have this constitutional perspective; did I understand you correctly?”

When her response rambled, Gowdy interjected, “For you to run to race as the explanation for why we hold the position that we do … Harry Reid had a very different perspective on recess appointments when there was a Texan in the White House and none of us accused him of geographic discrimination.”

Bodenweiser Retrial Moved To Kent County

GEORGETOWN — A Delaware Superior Court judge has agreed to move the retrial of former state Senate candidate Eric Bodenweiser to Kent County.

Judge E. Scott Bradley granted defense attorney Joe Hurley’s request to move the trial from Georgetown to Dover saying Bodenweiser may not be able to get a fair trial in Sussex County.

“The trial and the hung jury’s vote received a considerable amount of media coverage. Indeed, a large number of potential jurors in Sussex County are familiar with the case and have already concluded that the defendant is guilty,” Bradley wrote.

Disgustingly Rich People Charter Jets Just For Their Pets

After the demise of the former Pet Airways in 2012, pets either need to be driven from place to place, or travel by commercial air tucked under a seat or in the cargo hold. Or you could do what very, very rich people do: shuttle your pets from place to place using chartered luxury jets.

The New Howard County Executive Just Repealed Ken Ulman's Ban On Sugary Drink Sales

Just days after Ken Ulman departed as Howard County executive, his ban on sugary drinks is gone too.

New Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman on Thursday signed an executive order repealing Ulman's December 2012 ban on the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda on county property and at county-sponsored events. The sale of sugary drinks has been prohibited in places such as libraries and parks since Ulman implemented the ban, also via executive order.

The ban has been unpopular among many county employees and visitors to county-owned facilities. Ulman in 2012 told The Baltimore Sun the ban was about targeting obesity and helping people make healthier choices.

Officials say the cost and work schedule for the repairs are being refined, but should not exceed $20 million.

AG Gansler Secures $3.8 Million Settlement with Sirius XM Radio

Satellite radio company will provide restitution to consumers who experienced problems canceling service

Baltimore, MD - Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler announced today that his Consumer Protection Division, joined by 45 other Attorneys General, entered into a $3.8 million settlement with Sirius XM Radio Inc., resolving allegations that the New York-based satellite radio company engaged in misleading advertising and billing practices.

"Consumers shouldn't have to read the super-fine print or jump through hoops to understand and cancel their service contracts," said Attorney General Gansler. "Requiring Sirius to change its business practices means customers will be better informed about their rights and the terms of their agreement."

Debt Collectors Paying To Use Prosecutors’ Letterheads To Get People To Pay

It’s one thing to get a letter from a debt collector that erroneously claims you owe money and have to pay up; it’s another to receive that same notice from your local prosecutor. But what if that latter letter is actually coming from a debt collector who is paying the district attorney’s office for the right to contact certain consumers?

The Parents Who Canceled Christmas

(CNN) -- They are the parents who canceled Christmas.

John and Lisa Henderson of Hurricane, Utah, had finally had enough of their little hurricanes.

For months, the couple had been trying to teach their three boys, ages 11, 8 and 5, to stop being disrespectful and acting entitled.

"We gave them good warning, either it was time for their behavior to change or there would be consequences," wrote Lisa Henderson, co-founder of the Over the Big Moon blog, in a recent post.

"We patiently worked with them for several months and guess what, very little changed. One day after a particularly bad display of entitlement John said, 'We should just cancel Christmas.' "

Opposition to Com. Core = Jump in Homeschooling

The home-schooling boom is getting a new push due to opposition to Common Core, the controversial national education standard that some parents claim is using their children’s public school lessons to push a political agenda, according to critics of the Washington-backed curriculum.

North Carolina, already a home-schooling hotbed, saw a 14 percent rise last year in the number of students being educated at home, according to a report fromHeartlander Magazine. Similar increases have been seen in Virginia, California and New York, according to education activists.

“If you look at national, and even state polls, you can see that the more familiar people become with Common Core, the more they dislike it,” Bob Lubke, a senior policy analyst for the North Carolina-based Civitas Institute, told FoxNews.com. “They feel like they are losing control of what their kids are learning.”

An official for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, which oversees the state's public schools, says that the uptick in home-school enrollment has had no negative effect. In fact they say it is the opposite.

“We have experienced a statewide increase in enrollment over the past few years,” Vanessa Jeter, a spokeswoman for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, told FoxNews.com. “Since 2012-13, our statewide enrollment has increased by 27,512 students.”

I Rejected Abortion After My Rape, Then the Rapist Sought Custody of My Child

Our culture encourages women who become pregnant after rape to abort their unborn child, so for a woman to do otherwise is extremely courageous and should be lauded. Unfortunately, for one woman who made exactly that brave decision, she ended up going through another nightmare when her rapist fought her for custody of her child.

Years ago I was raped and then learned that I had become pregnant as a result of his attack. I thought that I had fought him off successfully despite the pain throughout every fiber of my body. I fought to make him stop. He would not. I was eventually rendered unconscious from his attack. He even subsequently broke into my home and pointed a gun at my pregnant belly threatening to kill “it” now or later if I did not drop the prosecution against him.

More than half a decade later, during which time there was no contact with my child by the man who raped me — which is how she was conceived, there he was in a Florida court asking for visitation and all other parental rights to which he should have never been entitled. I was horrified and shocked. How could this now be possible when it was not before? And how could the laws of the state where he raped me and where she was born — Louisiana, which had kept us protected from this terror no longer seemed to matter? It was because we were now Florida residents. The State of Florida did not have any laws that would protect my child from suddenly being forced into a relationship with her biological father who raped me, and the State forced me to relive through this court action the circumstances of her conception, which resulted from his attack.

The absence of any legal protection for us here in Florida allowed this traumatic nightmare to happen.

MH17 'was shot down in botched bid to assassinate PUTIN

Pro-Kremlin media names Ukrainian air force pilot who they allege downed craft

A Russian newspaper has made a series of outlandish claims regarding the MH17 disaster, including that the plane was shot down in a botched bid by the Ukrainian air force to assassinate Vladimir Putin on the orders of a billionaire oligarch.

Pro-Kremlin outlets have long blamed MH17 on Ukraine, and have now taken it one step further and named a Ukranian army pilot they say is guilty of shooting down the plane.

A Russian newspaper and TV station claim oligarch Ihor Kolomoyskyi believed Putin would fly the route in his private jet, and ordered that the Russian President be assassinated by the Ukranian army.

Lies About VA Reform Come To Light

Sharon Helman, director of the Phoenix VA Health Care System in which vets needing medical care languished on secret lists, finally got sacked last week. She was the face of the VA scandal. Yet firing her took seven months.

Unions have the Department of Veterans Affairs in a headlock, and nothing in the phony reform law passed by Congress last August changed that. Nearly all managers guilty of manipulating waiting lists, lying to vets and covering up are still getting paid. They have their jobs, or they’re collecting paid leave, or they retired with full benefits ahead of the ax. As for vets getting their promised Choice cards to escape wait lists and see a civilian doctor, don’t hold your breath.

A whistle blower exposed the dirty tricks at the Phoenix VA last April, forcing Congress to deal with a problem it had allowed to fester for a decade. Earlier investigations had uncovered how managers manipulated waiting lists to make themselves look good and collect bonuses, while vets suffered. But few members of Congress bothered to read those earlier reports.

Last May, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., offered a bill enabling the VA secretary to fire senior managers linked to the secret lists. Rubio said the secretary has to be able to “fire executives underneath him if they haven’t done their job.” But Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., a self-described socialist whose top campaign contributors are unions, killed the bill. Sanders insisted on protecting “due process” rules that make firing federal workers as hard as firing incompetent public school teachers.

Researchers have found that playing a single season of football can change the brain of a teenager - even if they don't suffer concussions.

Even though players were not concussed during the season, researchers found abnormalities similar to the effects of mild traumatic brain injury.

They called for more research into the area, which raises new questions over the safety of contact sports for young adults.

Who Benefits From the Ferguson Riots?

Everyone seems to have an opinion about the tragic events in Ferguson, Missouri. But, as Daniel Patrick Moynihan used to say, “You’re entitled to your own opinion but you’re not entitled to your own facts.”

Soon after the shooting death of Michael Brown, this 285-pound young man was depicted as a “gentle giant.” But, after a video was leaked, showing him bullying the owner of a store from which he had stolen some merchandise, Attorney General Eric Holder expressed displeasure that the video was leaked. In other words, to Holder the truth was offensive, but the lie it exposed was not.

Many people who claimed to have been eyewitnesses to the fatal shooting gave opposite accounts of what happened. Some even gave accounts that contradicted what they themselves had said earlier.

African-American Voters Lack Clout In Obama White House

A group of unelected African-American leaders were invited to meet with President Barack Obama in the White House Dec. 1, but only to talk about about racist cops in Ferguson, Mo. and elsewhere in the nation.

The issue of jobs and wages for African-American men, women and youths wasn’t on the agenda, even though only half of young black men have full-time jobs in the Obama economy.

“There was no discussion in this meeting about jobs,” Marc Morial, the current president of the National Urban League, told The Daily Caller as he walked away from a press conference outside the White House.

The meeting attendees also ignored the president’s Nov. 21 decision to suspend immigration enforcement and to award roughly four million work-permits to illegal immigrants who will compete against African-Americans for jobs.

“No, there was no discussion about that,” Morial admitted.

In 2008 and 2012, more than 90 percent of African-Americans voted for Obama, and they have continually provided high support for Obama, despite the stalled economy. That steady support has left them with little or no apparent political leverage on economic issues in the White House.

Watchdog reveals thousands of docs relating to disclosure of taxpayer data to White House

An IRS watchdog is acknowledging that thousands of documents related to requests between the White House and the tax agency for unauthorized tax information exist --- but says it must withhold them all due to privacy concerns.

The revelation by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) came as part of a lawsuit filed by non-profit group Cause of Action, which began investigating whether the IRS was improperly sharing taxpayer information with the White House in 2012.

Cause of Action originally filed a Freedom of Information Act request asking the IRS to turn over any documents, if they existed, related to correspondence between the IRS and the White House about requests for tax returns for individuals or businesses.

AG Gansler Warns Consumers About New Twist on Old Scam:

A Big Check Arrives by Mail, "Agent" Requests Partial Return of the Prize
Scheme uses fake "Publishers Clearing House" letterhead, promises a $75,000 prize and issues a worthless $4,216.74 check that ends up costing you $2,000

Baltimore, MD - Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler today urged consumers to be on alert for a scam that delivers to victims a fraudulent "Publisher's Clearing House" letter informing them that they've won a $75,000 "second place prize." The mailing includes a worthless check for $4,216.74 and a demand by scammers that recipients send their own $2,000 check back to the company.

"No legitimate contest will ever ask you to send money in order to claim a big prize," said Attorney General Gansler. "The check looks genuine and the prize is appealing, but it's just another scheme that really is too good to be true."

Politician

While stitching a cut on the hand of a 75 year old farmer, whose hand had been caught in the squeeze gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to politicians and their role as our leaders. The old farmer said, "Well, as I see it, most politicians are 'Post Tortoises'.''

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post tortoise' was. The old farmer said, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a tortoise balanced on top, that's a post tortoise." The old farmer saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain. "You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, he's elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of dumb arse put him up there to begin with."

Best explanation of a politician I've ever heard.

PBA Blasts ‘Anti-Police Rhetoric’ After Eric Garner Death

Leaders of two police unions had some strong words Tuesday over what they are calling anti-police rhetoric in the wake of the death of Eric Garner last month.

Speaking to reporters in Lower Manhattan, Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch discussed what he calls an attitude that says it’s acceptable to resist arrest, and urged officers to be cautious.

“The lack of respect for law enforcement resulting from the slanderous, insulting and unjust manner in which police officers are being portrayed by race baiters, politicians, pundits and even our elected officials,” Lynch said.

Lynch also disputed the medical examiner’s report that said a chokehold killed Garner during his arrest on July 17 and ripped critics who say police target minority communities.

“It is outrageously insulting to all police officers to say that we go out on our streets to choke people of color, as Al Sharpton stated while seated right next to our mayor at City Hall,” Lynch added.

“A cause of death of homicide is purely the way a person died, it’s not a criminal charge, it places no blame on anyone but yet we’re calling for a murder charge,” said Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins.

While the NYPD investigates, Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who subdued Garner, has been stripped of his gun and badge and placed on modified duty.

MIKULSKI, CARDIN, DELANEY ANNOUNCE ALMOST $43,000 IN FEDERAL FUNDING TO FOSTER JOB CREATION IN WESTERN MARYLAND

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin along with Congressman John Delaney (all D-Md.) today announced that the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded a $42,780 federal grant to Allegany Community College, also called the Allegany College of Maryland (ACM), for the ACM Automotive Technology Workforce Development. The program will serve 25 businesses and enroll 25 students and 15 workers in the first year.

“This grant is jobs, jobs, jobs in Western Maryland,” Senator Mikulski said. “The ACM Automotive Technology Workforce Development program will forge public and private partnerships between students, educational institutions and local businesses. Together, they’ll create new jobs, train the next generation for jobs tomorrow and grow Western Maryland’s economy.”

“To maintain our position as the world’s strongest economy we need to continue to educate and train the American workforce,” said Senator Cardin. “This investment by ARC will directly support more than a dozen new jobs today, and, by educating more than two dozen students, even more family-wage jobs tomorrow. I will continue to work in the Senate to fund this kind of innovative, job creating, public-private partnership.”

Marchers get racist reception in rural Missouri town

Demonstrators marching from Ferguson to Missouri's capital to protest the police shooting death of Michael Brown were met with opposition as they passed through a rural town.

Some people in Rosebud, population 400, shouted racial epithets and held signs telling them to 'go home.'

According to the Missourian, the marchers even encountered a 'display of fried chicken, a melon and a 40-ounce beer bottle' that was placed in the street.

Charles Barkley doubles down on Ferguson comments

Charles Barkley on Tuesday doubled down on his recent controversial comments about events in Ferguson, Missouri, as he maintained the black community needs to shoulder more blame for tragedies like the one that befell 18-year-old Michael Brown.

'We as black people, we got a lot of crooks,' the NBA legend told CNN in an interview he gave after taking heat for similar comments he made on a Philadelphia sports radio show last week.

The 51-year-old, who also famously supported the acquittal of George Zimmerman, publicly agreed with the grand jury decision not to indict Darren Wilson and doesn't fault police who tend to single out black people while investigating crimes.

'There's a reason they racially profile us at times,' he told CNN. 'Sometimes it's wrong, sometimes its right.'

Forget maternity leave - 'women should get PAID menstrual leave'

Women who suffer from period pains and feel under the weather each month should get paid leave, a leading doctor has suggested.

Gedis Grudzinskas, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, believes 'menstrual leave' would boost women's motivation and productivity when they are in the workplace.

He even goes as far as to question if a woman were to accidentally become pregnant, should her employer pay for the termination - although concedes that 'society is unlikely to be ready for that'.

Mr Grudzinskas, formerly of St Bartholomew's Hospital in London - and who now practices in Harley Street - is a leading international figure in the field of Reproductive Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics.

Explaining his reasoning, he told MailOnline: 'Some women feel really grotty when menstruating. Coming into work is a struggle and they feel lousy.

'When you feel like that, it's harder to take pride in your work or perform as well. This is about employers being sensible and aware.'

Thomas Sowell on "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" Ferguson Slogan: "I Thought Of Joseph Goebbels"

SEAN HANNITY: Let me play the Congressional Black Caucus on the House floor yesterday. They keep saying hands up, don't shoot. There's one problem. Eyewitnesses to the shooting of Michael Brown said, and I'll quote one of them, "he was charging at Officer Wilson like a football player with his head down." So he didn't have his hands up. But this is what they're saying...

Dr. Sowell, it's a catchy slogan, there's one big problem with it. It's fiction. Michael Brown, according to the eyewitnesses, did not have his hands up. What's your reaction? Why are members of Congress repeating something that they know is not true?

THOMAS SOWELL, ECONOMIST: Oh, for political reasons. I thought of Joseph Goebbels' doctrine, people will believe any lie if it's repeated often enough and loud enough. They're repeating it often enough and loud enough. And it will pay off for them personally and politically. People who are out to forward their political careers say and do things that have no relationship whatever to reality or to anybody else's interests but their own. I think what happened in Ferguson, Missouri, it is going to adversely affect blacks yet unborn who will still be paying the price for it 10, 20 years from now because you're not going to have businesses there that you had before. I've seen this happen in other cities. Detroit, is a classic example. Harlem. You run through the whole list of them. A city doesn't get over this kind of stuff in a few years.

This Database Tells You How Much Hospital Procedures Cost In Maryland

A new interactive database created by the Maryland Health Care Commission lets consumers learn more than they will probably ever want to know about how much specific medical procedures cost, which hospitals have the worst infection rates and how many knee joints hospitals replace in a year (it's 12,661).

The new Maryland Health Care Quality Reports website brings together consumer guides for hospitals, long-term care and ambulatory surgery centers. An interactive tool lets users search the 25 most common medical procedures and compare how much each costs, on average, at different hospitals. Reports on hospitals' consumer ratings, quality and safety results are also available. Users can create custom comparison reports with the data.

In short, it's a useful new tool for people who want to do their research before heading to surgery and a goldmine for anyone who likes to geek out on data.

Is White Racism the Cause of Black Riots?

In July of 1967, after race riots gutted Newark and Detroit, requiring troops to put them down, LBJ appointed a commission to investigate what happened, and why.

The Kerner Commission reported back that “white racism” was the cause of black riots. Liberals bought it. America did not.

Richard Nixon said of the white racism charge that there is a “tendency to lay the blame for the riots on everyone but the rioters.”

The Nixon-George Wallace vote in 1968 was 57 percent to Hubert Humphrey’s 43. In 1972, Wallace was leading in the popular vote in the Democratic primaries, when he was shot in Laurel, Maryland. In November of 1972, Nixon and Agnew swept 49 states.

Among the primary causes of the ruin of FDR’s great coalition, and the rise of Nixon’s New Majority, was the belief in Middle America that liberals were so morally paralyzed by racial guilt they could not cope with minority racism, riots and crime.

And so they lost the nation for a generation.

Despite dark sequester predictions, most federal agencies are getting bigger

Despite concerns about sequestration by unions and boasts about belt-tightening from politicians, the civil service workforce of most federal agencies has grown over the last several years.

And since the across-the-board cuts known as sequestration went into effect early last year, the permanent federal workforce grew by 34,000, more than any year in recent memory.

Fourteen of 18 cabinet-level agencies had more permanent employees at the end of 2013 than they did at the end of 2009, according to Office of Personnel Management data, with overall growth of 10 percent over the four years.

The Department of Homeland Security has 27,000 more employees, Health and Human Services has 7,000 more, the Social Security Administration 4,000 more and Commerce 2,000 more.

If there was pressure to keep labor costs down, many obscure agencies also flew under the radar.

$178 Billion In Government Kickbacks: Meet The World's Biggest Organized Crime Syndicate

Once upon a time it was the Sicilian, or Russian, or Japanese, or Chinese mob that were some of the biggest sources of funding for corrupt government officials (incidentally, most of them). After all, the government is smart enough to realize that it is more lucrative to "cooperate" with the world's biggest criminal syndicates than to wipe them out and cut off a major source of funding (of course, when it comes to populist optics and reelection, there is always an easy low-level perp walk every week or so to keep the peasants in place... and Diebold). So while the underlying symbiotic principle between the government and the world's biggest criminal enterprise remains the same, the counterparty has changed.

So who, in simple numeric terms, is the world's biggest organized crime syndicate?

The answer, courtesy of a new report by the Boston Consulting Group, which shows the transfer of some $178 billion in litigation costs into the pockets of government appartchiks in the past 6 years, is clear.

Banks.

30% Reduction in Force

The current, precarious financial status of all levels of government necessitates serious cuts in the numbers on the public payroll.

Government has to pick the pockets of private sector workers and business to fund these salaries and benefits that are often more lucrative than those of the private sector peoples whose pockets are being picked. Now is the time.

Let us hope our newly elected officials and representatives pick up the scalpels and start cutting. Don’t reflect on whether you will be reelected. If you do the right thing, there is a good chance you will. If not, take solace in knowing you did what had to be done…….

Worcester Parents Seek Teacher Raises, Increased Technology Funding

NEWARK – Appeals for raises for teachers and funding for technology topped budget requests made to the Worcester County Board of Education this week.

Representatives of School Improvement Advisory Committees (SIAC) from throughout the county shared their schools’ requests during a public budget input meeting Dec. 2.

Salary increases for teachers and funds for technology were asked for by each school.

“Teachers are demonstrably the most important resource we have,” said Todd Ferrante, the parent representing Ocean City Elementary School’s SIAC.

It was a sentiment echoed by each school’s representatives when it was their turn to speak.

CARDIN, HARRIS JOIN FORCES TO HONOR MARYLAND ICON HARRIET TUBMAN

Congress set to establish the first National Historical Park honoring an African-American woman

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and U.S. Representative Andy Harris (R-Md.-01) lauded action in the House of Representatives today that sets the stage for votes in both the House and Senate to establish the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Parks in Maryland and New York. Senator Cardin and Dr. Harris worked together to ensure that the park designation properly honors the life and work of Harriet Tubman while ensuring important protections for local property owners who were concerned about their property rights.

“Harriet Tubman was an iconic figure our nation’s history, for whom liberty and freedom were not just ideas,” said Senator Cardin. “I was proud to partner with Dr. Harris to properly honor the legacy of her life’s work and contributions while protecting Marylanders’ rights. More than 100 years after her death, Harriet Tubman will become the first African American woman and first individual woman to have a National Historical Park named in her honor. It’s a great day for the Eastern Shore and our country.”

“Through bipartisan work with Senator Cardin, we are able to create a national park to honor Harriet Tubman while protecting local property owners,” Dr. Harris said. “When the local community raised concerns about property rights, our offices worked together to find ways to protect the citizens while ensuring the park could move forward. I appreciate Senator Cardin’s willingness to work together to accomplish this for the Eastern Shore.”

The official designation of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park is expected to be approved as part of the National Defense Authorization Act.
