Legislative Black Caucus: Hogan should intervene in medical cannabis licenses

The head of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland is asking the governor to intervene in the awarding of medical cannabis licenses because the selected companies lack diversity, denying minorities the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of an emerging industry.

"I am completely disappointed with the medical marijuana commission and the decision that they have made in terms of awarding licenses," said Del. Cheryl D. Glenn, chairwoman of the black caucus. "Clearly, there was no effort at all to factor in minority participation and make sure that it's inclusive of everybody in the state of Maryland."

Members of the black caucus and others have raised concerns that the 15 preliminary licenses for growing medical cannabis and the 15 licenses for processing the drug, which were awarded this month, mostly went to companies led by white men. Lawmakers and some losing applicants are mulling legal action.

Why does everything have to be a black thing?

I'm very sure each applicant didn't have to state their RACE. This is just plain stupid.

A good business model is a good business model. If you don't have one, you're not going to be chosen, unless there's some sort of affirmative action program in place that gives points for not being able to rise to requirements.

Joe's right. Race wasn't considered in the application process.

actually if its a .gov contract they do ask about race, or anything else that makes you an mbe/dbe

The minorities have had a lock on the drug business long enough!

Here we go with affirmative action!

Race was not a criterion in this process. It shouldn't have been.

I want to play devil's advocate on this one. I do not agree with affirmative action however I see the problems with these contracts as a little different and understand the outrage from the black community.
For over a generation we have had a "war on drugs". Just like guns don't kill people drugs don't. You sit a needle full of heroine on a table in doesn't do anything until someone picks it up. So in a sense the government declared war on its own people and it fell heaviest on blacks despite equal % of users in both races.
Now we have a situation where a plant that you cannot OD on, is non-addictive, and has numerous health benefits and the government will not legalize it until they and their friends monopolize it. In Wocester it is Mathias and his buddies at Royal Plus. In Wicomico it is another group of good ole boy government contract winners winning yet again.
Now put yourself in the shoes of a black person who can't get a job or an apartment because of a prior conviction. Think about the woman who's husband is in jail or children who's father is there. And now while people are still going to jail on Marijuana charges, the politicians who write and enforce these laws are setting their friends up to get rich. This absolutely stinks. This is a prime example of pay to play politics.

I agree with you

OMG, can they find just one more thing to complain about?

It was a crooked process to begin with. Black people were screwed over just as good as white people, asian people, indian people, men, women, transgendereds, and everybody else who wasn't connected enough to get one of a limited number of licenses.

The only way this would have been a fair process would be to publish regulations and give everybody who meets them a license.

I agree. Blacks have way to much power, but it doesn't have to be that way. Whites need to quit giving it to them. Stupid Democrats.

The best should be the only selection. Nothing else should matter.

Number #1's always have to get involved and drop the race card. Since they have it so bad here I suggest they pack what little bit they own and move back to Nigeria.

Poor black man being held down by the man. LMAO.

Ueah, right, because they are the ones bringing it in on the planes and boats. You're a moron!

Why? Because the white race is superior and needs to remain as such? You people are unbelievably racist.

And you can move back to Europe.
