China Demands ‘Severe Punishment’ for American Who Vandalized 2,000-Year-Old Statue

China’s Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Promotion Center is demanding the United States “severely punish” a man who allegedly defaced an ancient terracotta warrior statue while it was on display at the Franklin Institute museum in Philadelphia.

The accused, Michael Rohana, is 24. The terracotta warrior, considered one of the most important archaeological discoveries in China, is about 2,200 years old and worth an estimated $4.5 million.

According to court documents, Rohana was at the Franklin Institute for an “ugly sweater” party on December 21 when he wandered into the terracotta warrior exhibit, took a few selfies alongside the statue, and then apparently broke off its thumb and pocketed it as a souvenir. After museum staff reported the thumb missing, the FBI tracked Rohana down to his home in Delaware. He admitted the theft and retrieved the broken thumb from his desk drawer when an FBI agent interviewed him.

CNN notes that one of the other attendees at the ugly sweater party stated that Rohana was “bragging about sneaking into the exhibit and having a thumb from one of the warriors” during the ride home to Delaware.

Let China do it. Punks like that are an embarrassment to this country.

Glad that he didn't have a can of spray paint or a fat Sharpie with him.

I think he should loose his thumb.

Send him to China for a thumbectomy.

I'm not saying what he did is right but actually stupid. Where is discipline? Respect? When I was 18 I was on my own across the country gainfully employed. Who had time for stupidity. Make America Proud.

If he did what he is accused of, then he should get the MAX penalty.

We need to get back to real punishment and stop all this disrespect, cut his hands off! Bet he won't steal again!!

An eye for an eye, a thumb for a thumb.

5:54 That is exactly what Sharia laws says, you muslim lover.

I agree, send him to China and let him suffer.

8:05 So, you want him to have no consequences and that type of attitude has gotten us to where we are today--no respect and people that are lazy and living off the government--aka my tax dollars. Sorry, we need real punishment again. Call it Muslim or whatever, but until we get serious again our country is lost. If you steal you give up your hands. If you can't do the time then don't do the crime!!

1:21 Who said no consequences? You are dumber than paint. We have laws, apply them or ship him to China and let them punish him. Don't put down Muslims 24/7 and then say you want Sharia law applied.

7:27 No need for personal insults. The point is that the laws and the arbitrary use of current consequences are not enough of a deterrent. That point is obvious as we look at for example snowflakes rioting on college campuses and paying no consequences for their actions, or this guy that thought he was being cute by damaging an ancient relic. He knows the consequences, if ever applied, will be minor and thus a cascading effect occurs as others see he does not pay the price and others do worse and so on. Make swift, real, and dramatic consequences for criminal behavior and therefore have real deterrents. This guy will maybe go to court and we'll likely hear how as a child he didn't get ice cream every night so how could he possibly be expected to be accountable for his actions.

He deserves what he gets! 2000 years old & he didn't know better? Spoiled brat! Throw him in prison for that long!

guess he never heard of Otto Warmbier.

That occurred in NKorea. One thing is certain, anyone stupid enough to do dumb things in NKorea will think twice knowing what happened to Warmbier. Excellent example of showing smart arse snowflakes real deterrents. Loud and ckear, you don't come into our country and disrespect us. In the US, we welcome the disrespect and reward it.

That perp showed no respect for China's important historical artifact,he is an embarassment to America and should be punished severly, like maybe 30 years in prison.

Simple. Bill him 4.5 million dollars. Problem solved.

Thumb for a thumb wouldn't be a good idea. This punk would probably call ACLU to sue the government and claim disability and have free ride for rest of his life on taxpayers dime. Let the Chinese have him for "work excursion visit" one way trip to People's Republic of China. Since he damaged 2,000 yr old Chinese property, he can pay his debt to Chinese society.

He should be turned over to China.
