Lawyers: Student In Sex Video Case Is Innocent

Molly Wei is accused of broadcasting live images of a freshman in a gay sexual encounter

Lawyers for one of the two Rutgers University students accused of secretly webcasting the sex life of a fellow freshman who later committed suicide said Tuesday that their client is innocent.

Prosecutors have charged Molly Wei and fellow Rutgers freshman Dharun Ravi, both 18, with invasion of privacy for allegedly using a webcam to broadcast the encounter between Ravi's roommate, 18-year-old freshman Tyler Clementi, and a man who hasn't been identified. Both of the students live in New Jersey.

Clementi jumped to his death off the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River three days later. His death has led to nationwide soul-searching over the plight of gay teenagers and to mourning on the Rutgers campus. Prosecutors are weighing whether to charge Wei and Ravi with a hate crime.

Update On Wood Pellets UPDATE.........

After purchasing two skids of pellets from our advertiser, the results are in. Yesterday we fired up the pellet stove and poured one bag into the hopper. Today, 24 hours later, there's still 1/2 of a bag left in the hopper. I set the thermostat at 90 degrees to make sure it did not stop.

They stated these were hard wood pellets and they're right. I have yet to purchase ANY other pellets from anyone else that burns more efficiently. If you have a pellet stove, I highly recommend you give this product a try. Posted at 10:50 AM.

UPDATE: Believe it or not, we're STILL burning the first bag, it's 80 degrees in the living room and there's still about 1/4 of a bag left to burn.

Fox News Polls: Republicans Sitting Pretty In Key States

Battleground state surveys show Republicans like Sharron Angle in good position to gain two seats and hold two others left open by GOP retirements, leaving Dems like Harry Reid with mountains to climb.

Democrats have a mountain to climb in West Virginia.

The latest Fox News battleground state surveys of five key states shows Republicans in good position to gain two seats and hold two seats left open by GOP retirements. Democrats, meanwhile, are well-positioned to hold only one.

The polls in West Virginia, Connecticut, Nevada, Missouri and Ohio show varying degrees of success for Democrats in dealing with low approval ratings for President Obama and his policies.

In West Virginia, even a popular governor cannot escape the gravity of Obama's bad numbers, while in Connecticut lukewarm ratings for Obama seem to do little harm to the well-known Democratic attorney general's Senate bid.

The latest surveys were conducted on Oct. 2 by Pulse Opinion Research for Fox News. Each survey included 1,000 likely voters and has a margin of error of 3 points.

SALISBURY’S CITY COUNCIL AGREES ON TWO THINGS – MORE & HIGHER TAXES!

The editorial in last Sunday’s issue of the Daily Times is just plain wrong in calling the Council "evenly divided and at war." Taint so, Mr. Bassett.

At its most recent meeting the Council, by unanimous vote, adopted Resolution 1977, which the Daily Times has failed to report, asking the Maryland General Assembly to allow the City to impose a bevy of new taxes. The vote as 3-0; Gary Comegys and Debbie Campbell were both absent. But Comegys can be counted as a "yea" vote.

In his role as president of the Maryland Municipal League, Comegys recently wrote to each town and city in Maryland, urging them to pass this resolution. With his letter is a discussion of "Municipal Funding Facts" that proposes that Salisbury and others could have the following:

Local option ("piggyback") tax, recordation & transfer taxes on deeds, building excise tax, hotel/motel tax, energy consumption tax and local restaurant ("food") tax
.
However, Ms. Campbell may be the Council’s sole dissenter – at the last work session she said "Our citizens are not in a position for us to hike taxes." Apparently Louise ("no new taxes") Smith feels otherwise, along with Ms. Shields, who in the past has opposed various fees and charges because of their effect on residents.

If you are a Salisbury resident or property owner, speak now or forever hold your peace -- at the Council’s next meeting (Oct. 12). Or as Paul Ellicott recently said, sell your property, if you can, and get out of Dodge ASAP.

And if you think that the Council can’t agree, here are the details.

Jon Stewart Lampoons Fired CNN Host Sanchez

Wife of fired anchor says on Facebook that he apologized to 'Daily Show' host

Jon Stewart gleefully struck back Monday night at former CNN host Rick Sanchez, who was fired after calling him a bigot.

Meanwhile, on her Facebook page, Suzanne Sanchez wrote that her husband had apologized to Stewart: "rick apologized to jon stewart today. they had a good talk. jon was gracious and called rick, 'thin-skinned.' he's right. rick feels horrible that in an effort to make a broader point about the media, his exhaustion from working 14 hr days for 2 mo. straight, caused him to mangle his thought process inartfully. he got ...caught up in the banter and deeply apologizes to anyone who was offended by his unintended comments."

In his opening spot on "The Daily Show" Monday, Stewart told his Comedy Central audience that, after taping last Thursday's edition, he had heard Sanchez interviewed on a radio program.

"I think Jon Stewart's a bigot," Sanchez was heard declaring in the taped replay.

"Omigod!" Stewart glowed from his anchor desk. "Rick Sanchez knows my name!"

Netanyahu Trying To Convince Top Ministers To Extend Settlement Freeze

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will convene his forum of top ministers on Tuesday afternoon to debate extending Israel's moratorium on construction in West Bank settlements for 60 days.

The concession would be made in exchange for a series of reported U.S. guarantees in Israel's direct peace negotiations with the Palestinians. Israel halted construction temporarily for 10 months, a freeze that ended on September 26.

The Palestinians have said they would not continue the recently renewed negotiations unless Israel agreed to halt construction again. The Obama administration has urged Israel to reconsider its refusal of that demand.

If Netanyahu succeeds in convincing the Forum of Seven to accept an extension of the construction freeze, he plans to bring the matter to the political-security cabinet for a vote later Tuesday.

The prime minister has an interest in reaching a cabinet decision on the matter before the Arab League follow-up committee meets in Libya on Friday to deliver its own stance on whether peace negotiations should continue.

Secretary of State Hilary Clinton spoke on Sunday with Netanyahu in an effort to reach a solution to the settlements construction deadlock.

State Department spokesman Philip Crowley defined the conversation as “very constructive”, refusing to get into details.

Netanyahu told ministers earlier Monday that Israel and the United States were holding behind-the-scenes talks geared at resolving a recent deadlock in Middle East peace talks with the Palestinians, adding that peace was Israel's vital interest.

Last week, the White House denied that Obama sent Netanyahu a letter proposing a set of U.S. guarantees to Israel in exchange for Israel extending a freeze on settlement construction in the West Bank for another two months.

Obama's letter was said to include a long list of American favors in exchange for an extension of the settlement building freeze, which ended this week. Most of these favors are critical to Israel's strategic security needs that Netanyahu has been demanding for years.

Other commitments that Obama reportedly offered Netanyahu in the letter include an agreement not to ask for any more building freeze extensions, an agreement to veto any anti-Israel UN Security Council resolution in the next year, and an agreement that the future fate of the settlements be dealt with only as part of a final status agreement with the Palestinians.

The American president also reportedly vowed to upgrade Israel's security capabilities and increase the three billion dollar security aid package that Israel receives annually. The letter included commitments to advanced weapons and early warning systems, including satellites.

Congress Hopefuls Vow To Be Pork-Free

The anti-pork brigade in Congress is poised to receive massive reinforcements next year, with nearly every non-incumbent GOP Senate candidate and hordes of House hopefuls swearing off earmarks themselves or even ready to consider an outright ban for all lawmakers.

That potential influx means a showdown with old-guard lawmakers - of both parties - who consider earmarking a central congressional prerogative. It also could mean a reversal of fortunes for critics such as Sen. Jim DeMint, the South Carolina Republican who has fought unsuccessfully to get his party to stop the practice.

"I will force a vote in the SenateGOP conference to ban earmarks next year," said Mr. DeMint, who has endorsed candidates supporting a ban. "I believe this will pass, and Republicans will be unified against the wasteful and corrupt earmark system."

House Republicans voted in March to impose a moratorium on earmarks for fiscal 2011 spending bills. All but a handful of their members have abided by it.

But no other party caucus in either the House or Senate has sworn off targeted spending requests that lawmakers use to deliver federal money for projects back home.

Democratic leaders argue that the solution is transparency, not elimination.

Promises to eliminate earmarks are likely to be the first major test of GOP unity after the midterm elections, regardless of whether Republicans win control of either chamber. The debate pits senior senators, who note that Congress was given the power of the purse, against a growing number of lawmakers who say earmarks have become a corrupting force.

Asked what his party will do next year about the issue, Sen. Thad Cochran, ranking Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee and a vocal defender of earmarks, laughed and shook his head. "Have a lively discussion of the issue," he said.

Vulnerable House Democrats Run Away From Their Party’s Record

House Democrats in tough races are running away from their party’s legislative record as they face an electorate that's skeptical of what the party has accomplished over the past two years and rates Congress at historic lows.

A Gallup tracking poll from the end of September shows that only 18 percent of voters approve of the job Congress is doing while landmark legislation like healthcare reform and the stimulus remains unpopular.

The abysmal approval numbers come against the backdrop of a Congress that is able to boast more major legislative achievements than any Congress in decades. It's a legacy House Democrats are wrestling with ahead of Election Day and, more often than not, repudiating in close contests.

"It's not everyone's cup of tea," said Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), who is a Republican target this fall. "Moderates and Blue Dogs in our caucus have grown increasingly antsy about that agenda and whether it was or is overly ambitious."

Connolly voted in favor of healthcare reform, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, but over the past two months the Virginia Democrat has emerged as one of the loudest Democratic voices urging the leadership to extend the George W. Bush tax cuts, even for the wealthiest Americans.

Before Congress left Washington last week, Connolly was one of 39 Democrats who voted with Republicans against adjournment on the grounds the House shouldn't leave before addressing the tax-cut issue.

The ranks of Democrats running against the litany of the party’s legislative achievements has grown over the past month as those who were already trying to stake out centrist ground ahead of November have shifted even further away from their party.

Trucks Challenge ‘Liberal’ Media To ‘Tell The Truth’

On Friday, four billboard trucks in New York City bearing the message “Stop the Liberal Bias, Tell the Truth!” started circling the Manhattan headquarters of ABC, CBS, NBC, and the New York Times. The trucks will do so for eight hours every weekday for the next four weeks as part of a campaign run by the Media Research Center, a watchdog group that analyzes the media for liberal bias.

Similar trucks are also operating in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, passing the offices of the broadcast networks, the Washington Post, CNN, the Newseum, the National Press Club and Politico, and ads about the campaign are running on numerous Web sites and on conservative talk radio programs.

L. Brent Bozell III, president of the Media Research Center (MRC), the parent company of CNSNews.com, said the goal of this 2010 “Tell the Truth!” campaign “is simple: to force the liberals in the media to stop pushing an agenda and just tell the truth.”

The “liberal media news networks” need to report the facts about “massive growth in government and its control over our lives, and about spending, deficits and debt,” he told CNSNews.com. “They also need to tell the truth about the efforts to turn our country into a European-style Socialist state.”

New Bill: At Least 10,000 National Guardsmen At Mexican Border

Rep. Ted Poe (R.-Texas), who served for 30 years as a Texas prosecutor and judge before being elected to Congress, introduced legislation last week designed to force President Barack Obama to deploy a minimum of 10,000 National Guard troops at the U.S. Mexico border for the specific purpose of patrolling the border and intercepting aliens and smugglers attempting to cross illegally into the United States.

The legislation would allow the president to deploy more than 10,000 National Guardsmen, but not fewer.

“The president could put more than that, but he must put 10,000,” Poe told CNSNews.com. “The uniqueness of this is they would be paid by the federal government, because everybody says it is the responsibility of the federal government to protect the border. So the federal government will use the resources it already has to pay for those 10,000 National Guard troops, but they will be supervised by the governors of the four states on the border.”

Poe, who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism and the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, told CNSNews.com in a videotaped interview that America was projecting such a weak image around the world in failing to protect its southern border that people were traveling from all around the world to Mexico so they could enter the U.S. illegally from there.

Guess Who Was Called For Jury Duty in Manslaughter Case

HERKIMER, NY — The last person anyone would have expected to be called as a juror in the manslaughter trial of Matthew Lewis was Matthew Lewis himself. Yet Lewis, 23, broke the odds of that unlikely probability when he received a summons for jury duty Monday in Herkimer County Court on the same day his trial was scheduled to begin in connection with the October 2009 drunken driving crash that killed two of his friends.
There was no trial Monday, since Lewis instead decided to plead guilty. But both the defense and prosecution attorneys agreed that such a coincidence is unlike anything they’ve ever seen before.“It’s probably one of the most ironic things that could possibly happen,” said Lewis’ attorney, George Aney, as he showed the jury duty summons with Lewis’ name on it.
After bringing the summons to the court’s attention, Aney said he plans on asking a local college to calculate the odds of a defendant being summoned to sit as a juror in his own trial considering the county’s population.
Obviously, Lewis would never have been picked to sit as his own juror, so the summons would have had little or no impact on the case, Herkimer County District Attorney John Crandall said.Nevertheless, Crandall said the occurrence was more than unusual – “It’s a lot unusual,” he quipped.

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan – Missing In Action?

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan has decided to step down from participating in nearly half of the 51 cases the court has agreed to review this term because of potential conflicts of interest.

The news that Kagan will bow out of an unexpectedly large number of cases sent attorneys and legal scholars scrambling as the first day of the court's new term began Monday. Observers are trying to determine how major case law could be affected by not having a ninth justice on the bench for as many of the 25 cases that the court has agreed to hear so far this year.

The court is expected to agree to hear another 25 to 35 cases this term, and it is possible that Kagan will recuse herself from some of those cases as well.

Jay Sekulow, the chief counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice who has argued several cases before the Supreme Court, tells Newsmax, "The ramifications of this recusal could be significant for a generation."

He added: "I think this is fraught with disaster, as far as getting definitive opinions out of the Supreme Court of the United States. I think it's going to make it very difficult."

During her confirmation, Kagan presented senators with a list of 11 cases that she planned to recuse herself from because of her work as U.S. solicitor general. Since that time, she had decided to also recuse herself from more than a dozen more cases.

"She was not accurate, nor was the Senate," Sekulow tells Newsmax. "So you've got half the docket that she's recused from."

If Kagan recuses herself and the eight remaining justices are deadlocked 4-4 on an issue, the ruling by the last appellate court to hear the case before it went to the U.S. Supreme Court automatically stands.

RSC Update

Last week, Democrats voted to adjourn the House without even trying to address the looming 2011 tax hikes. Notably, the motion to adjourn only passed by a single vote – clear evidence that there was bipartisan support for Congress to stay in town and stop these job-killing tax increases immediately. But taxes aren’t the only issue in which Democrats dropped the ball – they also allowed the 2010 fiscal year to lapse on Thursday without even attempting to write a budget for 2011.

Massive overspending is driving the national debt higher and higher, yet Democrats have refused to cut back. RSC members offered a smaller, more responsible spending plan that would keep the government running for the next twelve months (as well as a full budget). Instead, Speaker Pelosi pushed through a one-month plan that did not reduce spending and will force Congress back to Washington for a Lame Duck session.

Before leaving town last week, Democrats also brought about 100 separate pieces of legislation to the House floor – such as the bill congratulating the Washington Stealth lacrosse team. Clearly, the Democrat leadership wanted to get some stuff done before going home. One has to wonder why there was not similar urgency to write a budget or act to stop the coming tax hikes.
Sincerely,
Congressman Tom Price, M.D.

Inspector General Blows Whistle on Poor OSHA Oversight

A federal government program aimed at protecting private-sector whistleblowers does a poor job of investigating complaints, and workers who are fired or blackballed after reporting violations rarely win restoration, according to a government report.
The Labor Department's office of inspector general said the vast majority of federal investigations into whistleblower complaints missed basic steps, such as interviewing witnesses, and workers who reported violations received no guarantees that their complaints would receive appropriate investigation under the Whistleblower Protection Program.
In a little-noticed 36-page report released Thursday, the inspector general's office estimated that 80 percent of the whistleblower investigations conducted under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) — which oversees the Whistleblower Protection Program it created — did not meet one or more of eight elements essential to the investigative process.
The report, signed by Elliot P. Lewis, assistant inspector general for audit in the inspector general's office, said OSHA's Whistleblower Investigations Manual had not been updated since 2003 and that investigators did not have any written guidance on how to conduct investigations under the three new whistleblower statutes assigned to OSHA since the last update.
Additionally, it said, many investigators did not have access to experts on subject matter for technical guidance on the 17 statutes they were responsible for enforcing.
OSHA is charged with enforcing the whistleblower protections of 19 laws covering about 200 million U.S. workers. The laws cover job safety, pollution control, corporate fraud and other matters. The law prohibits employers from retaliating against employees who come forward with complaints.
In August, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a scathing report on the whistleblower program that said OSHA had "done little" to ensure that investigators had the necessary training and equipment to do their jobs, and that it lacked sufficient internal controls to ensure that the whistleblower program operated as intended.
The GAO said that while OSHA had enhanced its whistleblower training and had established two mandatory two-week courses in 2007 and 2008, it had not ensured attendance or taken steps to make sure investigators had the necessary equipment to do their jobs. The agency also criticized OSHA for inconsistent program operations, inadequate tracking of program expenses and insufficient performance monitoring.

Best Friends Buried Side-By-Side At Arlington

With a chill in the air, Navy Seal Brendan Looney was laid to rest Monday at Arlington National Cemetery.

The DeMatha High School graduate from Silver Spring, Md., was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan two weeks ago.

Travis Manion, his best friend and roommate at the Naval Academy, preceded him in death. A Marine, Manion was killed three years ago by a sniper in Iraq.

Looney was devastated. He choked up as he spoke at his best friend’s memorial service.

"He was a great friend," he said. "I won’t forget him. I’ll miss him."

The two young service members became so close at the Naval Academy that they were like brothers. After their 2004 graduation from the Naval Academy, they went off to fight in separate wars.

Now, the two friends are united in once more. They were buried side-by-side.

What Will Facebook Reveal On Wednesday?

We just got an invite to a press event at Facebook HQ this Wednesday. What will they reveal?

Could it be the oft-discussed but even more oft-denied Facebook phone? Let's just quickly review the last word on that subject, from Mark Zuckerberg himself: "At the end of the day, when people say 'building a phone' they actually can mean very different things," he told TechCrunch at the end of the FB Phone frenzy a few weeks back. So, what exactly did you mean, Mark?

And if it's not a phone, what could it be? I am always waiting for Facebook to fire up a human-powered search engine. You can't tell me 500 million copper tops filtering data day in and day out can't be rendered into a very handsome Google killer.

AUTOPSY REVEALS DEATH OF BUS DRIVER DUE TO MEDICAL ISSUE

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Maryland State Police traffic crash investigators were informed today that an autopsy revealed the death of the bus driver involved in the crash last week on I-270 was due to a medical condition and not the result of the crash.

Maryland State Police CRASH Team investigators were informed today by doctors at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore that Joseph A. Clabaugh Jr., 66, of Hanover, PA, died of a heart attack. Clabaugh’s death was not attributable to any injuries sustained in the crash.

This information is consistent with statements provided to Maryland State Police investigators by passengers on the charter bus that left the roadway on the northbound I-270 HOV express lane from the outer loop of I-495 shortly after 4:00 p.m. on September 29, 2010, and rolled 45 feet down an embankment before coming to rest alongside the northbound I-270 spur from the inner loop of I-495. Multiple passengers told investigators the driver appeared to be sweating profusely. One passenger asked him if he was okay just before he appeared to pass out and slumped over the wheel, as the bus left the roadway.

The investigation is continuing.

Flying A Kite

I was in my back yard trying to launch a kite.

I threw the kite up in the air, the wind would catch it for a few
seconds, then it would come crashing back down to earth.
I tried this a few more times with no success.

All the while, my wife Karen is watching from the kitchen window,
Muttering to herself how men need to be told how to do everything.

She opens the window and yelled to me,
'You need a piece of tail.'

I turned with a confused look on my face and said,

'Make up your mind. Last night, you told me to go fly a kite.'

EFFORTS CONTINUE TO INCLUDE CHILD SUPPORT FUNDING BEFORE 2010 ENDS

On September 30, 2010, Congress passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to allow the federal government to continue to operate after October 1, 2010.

Despite a bi-partisan effort aimed at including full child support funding, the CR did not appropriate any 'new' funding for programs slated to expire on September 30, including extending the ability to use performance incentives as match for additional federal child support dollars. The CR also failed to include funding for such programs as TANF emergency grants and other programs that benefit poor families. The child nutrition reauthorization also failed to pass in the waning hours.

We will continue our efforts to maintain child support funding in anticipation of the lame duck session. After we discuss strategy with our child support champions on Capitol Hill, we will update you on how you can assist further in maintaining the funding.

Earlier in September, Senate Finance Chairman Baucus (D-MT) included the provision in one of his key pieces of legislation before the recess. Senator Cornyn (R-TX) has been invaluable in raising the issue with Finance Committee Ranking Minority Member Grassley (R-IA), and NCSEA staff were in constant communication with Senator Rockefeller's staff until Wednesday night when the issue could not move any farther in the legislative process.
Those in Congress working on this issue are committed to finding the appropriate vehicle for at least a one-year extension for federal funding. Congress is aware that they can pass a bill retroactive to October 1, 2010, and states can claim the match at that time. This same mechanism was used in the last extension.

We also want you to be aware that the Senate gave "advice and consent" to ratify the Hague Convention on International Recovery of Child Support and Family Maintenance. This not only shows bi-partisan support for the program but, once signed by the President, will also make the United States the first country to ratify the Convention.
While our work continues to ensure full funding, we should acknowledge the strong, bi-partisan support of the Congress and the tremendous support we've received from organizations across the country.

Your letters and calls have made the issue more than a national policy debate -- they have literally brought the message "home" and that, ultimately, is the most important piece of information your members of Congress want and need. We will build on that message in the coming weeks before the lame duck session begins on November 15.

If you have any questions about NCSEA legislative issues, please contact Colleen Eubanks at ColleenEubanks@ncsea.org

On Education, Martin O’Malley Making Stuff Up

After making stuff up about electricity rates and covering stuff up about Maryland’s faltering economy, Martin O’Malley is now misleading Marylanders about education in Maryland.  Not only is he taking credit for Bob Ehrlich’s successes, but also covering up a secret plan to raise tuition after raising the overall cost of college the past four years.

·         Bob Ehrlich’s Record School Investments:  No governor in Maryland history, including Martin O’Malley, has increased state funding for public schools more than Bob Ehrlich.  Despite inheriting a budget deficit, Bob Ehrlich increased state support for public K-12 education by an unprecedented $1.4 billion. As a result, test scores rose across Maryland during his tenure.  In fact, Ehrlich’s investment of state dollars to support K-12 education exceeded O’Malley’s by nearly 80 percent.  O’Malley has used over $620 million in one-time federal stimulus dollars to cover his obligations to fund public education. (http://www.dbm.maryland.gov/)

·         O’Malley plans a 26% increase in tuition after re-election: Tucked way towards the back of Martin O’Malley’s last budget it shows he’s planning a 26.5% increase in tuition if he’s reelected (5.3% per year) Appendix F: http://dbm.maryland.gov/agencies/operbudget/documents/2011/fy2011budgethighlights.pdf

·         O’Malley increased cost of college by 26%:  The cost of going to the University of Maryland College Park, for example, actually increased $5,767 – or 26% -- since Martin O’Malley has taken office. These costs include tuition, room, board, and other mandatory fees.  The same can be said for several other public institutions in Maryland, such as Salisbury University and Towson University. So while O’Malley says he froze tuition working families are actually being forced to pay more to send their child to college under Martin O’Malley.

·         O’Malley Cut Higher Education:  Martin O’Malley cut the University System of Maryland’s emergency fund program by $133 million. The purpose of this emergency fund is to help raise money for student financial aid. So at a time when working families need financial aid the most, O’Malley is cutting a financial aid program and raising the overall cost of college. (Source: 2010 90 Day Report, Maryland General Assembly)

·         College Park President confirms looming tuition hikes:  Dr. Wallace Loh, president of the University of Maryland, tells WYPR in the linked interview that the biggest challenge facing UMD is, “constrained state support” and that there is “a little bit of room to have some increases in tuition” and “the question is not whether it will rise but by how much.”  http://mdmorn.wordpress.com/2010/08/18/818101/

·         Percent of Maryland residents declining:  The number of Maryland residents attending USM institutions has declined by roughly 5,000 since O’Malley took office.  77% of the USM student body under Ehrlich was Maryland residents. It’s 72% under O’Malley.

·         O’Malley cut community college funding: In 2006, Governor Ehrlich set Cade formula funding on a course that would increase State support for community colleges, making a higher education more affordable.  During the 2009 Session, Governor O’Malley not only reversed Gov. Ehrlich’s plan increases but made cuts to community college budgets by significantly reducing State support.  Currently, the FY ‘11 budget reflects community college funding levels as they stood in FY ’08.

·         O’Malley’s Financial Aid Backlog: Under Martin O’Malley, applications for need-based financial aid increased 45 percent, yet the number of students still waiting for that aid at the end of the academic year increased by 84 percent.

·         O’Malley Cutting School Construction:  O’Malley is actually cutting school construction funds by $150 million next year compared to Fiscal Year 2008.  FY 2008 school construction funding was $400 million. O’Malley is pledging $250 million next year.  (http:http://www.dbm.maryland.gov/, Washington Post July 8, 2010).

·         Making Stuff Up While Covering Stuff Up:  Martin O’Malley will do anything – including making up dishonest attacks against Bob Ehrlich – to cover up his legacy of raising costs on college students while cutting school construction funding next year.

O'MALLEY KICKS OFF "ON YOUR SIDE" TOUR

Affirms Commitment to Maryland's Families;
Statewide, Month-long Tour Planned in the "On Your Side" Express

Baltimore, MD Governor O'Malley officially kicked off Maryland's "On Your Side" tour with the College Democrats and other O'Malley-Brown supporters at the University of Maryland College Park.

Giuls Kunkel, Senior at the University of Maryland, Vice President of College Democrats and one of the stars of the O'Malley-Brown T.V. ad "Tuition" started the program and explained, "If it were not for the freeze in college tuition, I may not have been able to afford college.  I know that Governor O'Malley is on my side."

Governor O'Malley was joined by dozens of other college democrats and O'Malley-Brown supporters.  He talked about how affordable, quality education is key to moving Maryland forward.  After college tuition sky-rocketed 40% under Bob Ehrlich, Governor O'Malley and Lt. Governor Brown made the important investments that allowed Maryland to become the only state in the nation to freeze college tuition for four years in a row.
Daniel Borman, President of the University of Maryland college democrats presented Governor O'Malley with a University of Maryland sticker to put on his table.

Daniel said, "Governor, we wanted you to have this sticker to remind you that we appreciate you fighting for us.  And to let you know that we are on your side too."
Governor O'Malley and Lt. Governor Brown have always put the needs of Maryland's family and family-owned businesses first and the tour will highlight their continued commitment to Maryland's working families.
The stop is the first of many scheduled around the state.  Governor O'Malley will be traveling with a kitchen table.

He explained, "We're traveling the state with this kitchen table because we know that families across our state make their toughest decisions around the kitchen table.  That's where my mom and dad always brought us together to discuss the good things and tough decisions we would have to make as a family."

"And that's what we've done to move our State forward.  We've rolled up our sleeves and made the tough decisions always on the side of working families in our state.  This tour will represent my continued commitment to protecting and advancing the needs of Maryland's working families," said Governor O'Malley.

Governor O'Malley traveled to College Park in a 31-foot RV dubbed the "On Your Side" Express, nicknamed "Katie."  Governor O'Malley and Lt. Governor Brown will travel the state for the "On Your Side" tour for the final month of the campaign to meet with Marylanders and discuss their vision to move Maryland forward.

Delaware Senate Candidate: 'I'm Not A Witch'

In TV ad, O'Donnell says nobody's perfect and concludes with 'I'm you'

In her first campaign ad since winning the GOP primary, Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell assures voters: "I'm not a witch."

O'Donnell's been dealing with questions about witchcraft since a 1999 confession on a late-night talk show surfaced that she had dabbled in it as a teenager.

The ad begins running statewide on Tuesday. It opens with O'Donnell looking into the camera and immediately telling voters that she's not a witch.

Election Day Is Fast Approaching

Election Day is fast approaching. If you don’t want six more years of failed policies, higher taxes, and a Senator who constantly refuses to listen to the people, we need your help to spread the word about our campaign!

Just this week, Barbara Mikulski had the opportunity to stand up for Marylanders and demand a vote to halt the massive tax increases set to take effect this year. Instead of leading Maryland, she chose to side with her party leaders and treat every American taxpayer as a pawn in a dangerous Election Year scheme. That’s not leadership, that’s cowardice, and Marylanders deserve a Senator who will represent the people, not liberal special interests.

Even worse, Barbara Mikulski has been airing misleading television ads to try and dupe voters that will continue until November 2. We need to have the best, most organized grassroots campaign to let voters know just how bad Barbara Mikulski has been for Maryland, and why we just can’t afford to send her back to the Senate.

What can you do to help?

Help us grow the movement! The easiest way to help doesn’t cost you any time or money. All you have to do is email your family, friends, neighbors and colleagues and let them know about the Wargotz campaign. Add us to your email distribution list and tell them to do the same (eric@wargotz.com). Tell them how important it is that we elect a real leader who will fight for Maryland, and tell them how important it is that we fire Barbara Mikulski this November. Ask them to visit our website, http://www.wargotz.com/. Then ask them to email all of their friends and family and let them know they have a clear choice on November 2nd if they want to get Maryland moving in the right direction. Tell everyone to vote for Eric Wargotz on November 2nd.

Contribute today! It is an unfortunate fact in political campaigns today that it takes money to win. That’s especially true when your opponent has vast amounts of cash from special interests at her disposal. Your contributions go toward communicating our message directly to the voters. Please visit http://www.blogger.com/ and contribute today. Every contribution helps us reach our goal of sending a real, common-sense leader to Washington to look out for all Marylanders!

Volunteer! Money alone doesn’t win elections; people do. Any time you can spare helps us reach out to voters, man our campaign offices, and make sure we are well represented at the polls on Election Day. All you have to do is visit http://www.wargotz.com/volunteer.aspx%20and tell us how you can help today!

Thanks so much for your support.
