Pennsylvania governor issues arrest warrant for groundhog!

PENNSYLVANIA (WITI) — A high-profile arrest warrant has been issued to Punxsutawney Phil — better known as the famous groundhog.

Phil was last seen February 2nd, better known as Groundhog Day.

The groundhog is now under fire for seriously under-predicting how much of winter is really left.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf issued a statement saying the police should “drop their cold hearted plan to arrest Phil.”

For now, investigators suspect he is holed up underground. Although, they do hope he comes out soon.

Sometimes Neighbors Just Plain Suck!

If there's one business I truly enjoy it's the Backstreet Grill in Salisbury. Always clean, always friendly, prices are fantastic and the food quality is very enjoyable.

I've been frequenting Backstreet for a few years now and one thing that always amazed me was the lengths everyone goes through to make sure no one parks in the Paint Store parking lot next door.

Once a tow truck hooks you up there's a $250.00 fee to get your vehicle back. The Owner of Backstreet has done just about everything he can think of to work something out with the property owner. He's offered money to allow his patrons to park there and even meals to boot. The Paint Store refuses to work with them.

I can tell you first hand, the owner of the Paint Store has a camera set up that they watch all night long and I'm NOT kidding you. They actually sit at home on Friday and Saturday night, (at least) and watch their live camera picking up on someone pulling into their parking lot. Once they do, the Tow Truck company is called immediately and I'm not kidding, within 30 seconds they are there for the tow.

This weekend the owner of Backstreet pulled his pickup truck right next to the Paint Store entrance, put lights on the signs in the bed of the truck in order to keep their customers from parking there. Believe it or not, I even watched someone pull in there and park their car, UNREAL! We warned them immediately and within seconds the Tow Truck was pulling into the parking lot.

If it isn't bad enough that City is so business unfriendly, neighbors can be even worse. The owners of Backstreet even tried putting up the plastic yellow warning tape across the parking lot entrance but the owners of the Paint Store saw it on their cameras and drive down there to pull it down.

I know where I'll never be buying my paint from now on.

There's A Time and A Place For Alcohol, The Civic Center Doesn't Fit The Bill

For years I have been hearing over and over again, the Wicomico County Civic Center needs alcohol, I disagree.

While Salisbury and Wicomico County are desperate for economic development, millions of dollars are being invested right now in small Bars and Restaurants who would enjoy the before and after traffic from those attending the Civic Center festivities.

What I think most are forgetting is that buying a beer there, (for example) will be far more expensive, for starters. Secondly, the Civic Center doesn't host that many events throughout the year that would demand alcohol consumption.

Do you really want to take your kids to Disney on Ice or a Globetrotters event and drink alcohol? It's called the "Youth & Civic Center" for a reason.

You don't go to the Movies and sit there for 2+ hours drinking alcohol, so why such a fuss over the Civic Center?

Here's what I personally see in the future. Doug Marshall is building an Amphitheatre in Delmar with PRIVATE funds. The venue you'll see there will host much bigger concert style events then the Civic Center can host anyway. If you are not aware, booking companies require a certain amount of seats per celebrity/group. Doug's Heron Ponds facility is allowed to serve alcohol and will eventually have a Restaurant/Bar on that location.

So why does local government want to compete, (once again, since they already compete with catering food) with independent businesses? I personally think it's unfair and the County should not only stick with what they have, they should excel in events that do not require alcohol customers.

I'm sure many of you have heard me say this in the past but I used to own a chain of Upscale Billiard Rooms, No Alcohol. We made a small fortune in that business. Could we have made more with alcohol, not really. By doing so, (like Breaktime Billiards) you are catering to a different crowd and problems.

Let the independent investors do their thing and I believe the Civic Center could do extremely well with what they have. It just takes the right kind of management to make it work. Besides, the contractual agreement there says this is not possible, so get over it.

Delmar Redistricting Map

Joe,
Can you please share this map with your readers?

The proposed changes put Delmar children on track to become WiHi Grads. This does not bode well for the continuation of the Bi-State agreement in the years ahead. One question I have is if a home is redistricted out of the Delmar District then what happens to current Delmar High School students. will they have to switch to WiHi next year?! And I'm concerned about potential harm to property values as being in the Delmar District is a definite plus.

Thank you,

Delmarva Muslim Leader Condemns ISIS Violence

By Dave Toth

A Delmarva resident and Imam from Africa is condemning the brutal ISIS killings that have dominated news headlines recently.

“This is not Islam. It is not how I understand Islam,” he said, while requesting that his identity be kept anonymous for security reasons. “It is very clear in the Qur’an, whoever kills one person is like killing all of humanity, and he who helps one person survive, is like helping all of humanity.”

A Sudanese, African born native, he holds a Master’s Degree in Islamic Studies in addition to a Certification of Memorization of the Qur’an, which he said is only held by about 1 in 1,000 Muslims among the currently estimated 1.6 billion who are active worldwide.Referencing the Qur’an, he emphasized that memorization and understanding are necessary in order to benefit from its message.

He was also quick to distance himself from the terrorists known as ISIS when asked about the relationship he shared to them as a Muslim. The Imam also described the ISIS killings and world violence as being much the same. Describing ISIS to be more like others who commit brutal violence as a common evil presence that exists anywhere in the world, he asked for others to consider violence and brutality unacceptable in any society, and that it is also unacceptable when used against other religions.

“We are not allowed to force anyone to change their religion. That is in the Qur’an. Islam is an open invitation to everybody, but you should not use force,” he said. “The people are free to follow you or to forget about you.”

When asked about Sharia or Islamic Law and its controversial place in America, the Imam expressed an interest in seeing it have a place if people were voluntarily willing to adopt it, while he also suggested that Islam like other religions such as Catholics, Jewish, or Buddhists, are always interested in increasing their membership through active recruitment.

The Imam agreed Muslims are reluctant to speak out against terrorism, and stated he thinks Muslims have been slow to speak because of news media tension which has left many Muslims feeling pressured to apologize.

“I personally think the media and others demand Muslims apologize. This is not fair at all. I should not apologize for something I did not do,” he said

In discussing the burning of a Jordanian pilot that influenced outrage among some Muslims globally the Imam expressed only general disapproval.

“They consider him not a Muslim,” he said, describing ISIS militants’ actions against a fellow Muslim. “They consider him ‘murtadd,’ or somebody who backed away from Islam and now doesn’t deserve to be a Muslim.”

Opposing the concept of one Muslim declaring another person a non-Muslim, the Imam also denounced ISIS for their handling of the Jordanian pilot stating that “only God has the right to judge.”

In looking at the whole picture of the worldas Middle East tension continues to escalate amid increased terrorism activity, the Imam remained sternly focused on his own peaceful approach, while expressing support for opposition to terrorism.

“My peaceful way is stronger than bombing,” he said. “But, we need the law in order to live in peace.”

In an attempt to put Muslims, Christians and other religions all closer together, with each having their own place in the world, he said, “We should think of the world as one place and accept people as they are. We all come from the same God.”

Greg Bassett Is So Full Of Sh!t

“We aim high to produce meaningful, accurate stories,” said Greg Bassett, the newspaper’s editor and general manager. “We will not take sides in our news coverage. We will cover the news straight and treat everyone fairly.”

In today's paper Bassett extensively goes after County Executive Bob Culver again. As I had stated from the very beginning, Bassett's paper is a propaganda piece for the old "Dream Team" and what's left of the LIBERAL machine here in Salisbury and Wicomico County.

ALL Liberal Blogs have failed. Even John Robinson's attempt at trying to do what Greg is now attempting to do also failed. You can always tell who's doing what, when you read that these papers will be speaking of only love, peace and a rainbow way of life. The rest, (like the quote above) are just plain lies, which we saw time after time when Bassett would publish the code of journalistic ethics in the Daily Times, when he had a real job and blew it.

Today's Survey Question 2-14-15

Have you noticed that ever since your "Smart Meter" was installed your bill is at least double what it used to be.

What was your old average
and now
what is your new average bill?

Ladies & Gentlemen, this is a major topic. I do know that last month many are saying their bill was a bit higher because the cycle was 40 days, not the usual 30 days. However, many who were used to let's just say a monthly average this time of year to be $250.00 are now getting bills of $700.00 and up! Many are even saying they just can't afford it any more.

I think you're going to find these comments to be VERY interesting. I know it's Saturday but let's see how this article goes comment wise. Please participate so our elected officials can see how screwed us peasants are these days. I'm hoping on Monday to deliver an in depth investigative report on this matter because Senator Jim Mathias is neck deep in the "Smart Meter" legislation.

FOP Collective Bargaining Agreement Reached With County Executive Bob Culver

Salisbury, MD... Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver has announced the finalization of the Collective Bargaining Agreement by Wicomico County, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Union for the period July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2016.

An agreement was reached by the County, Sheriff and the FOP establishing a death benefit of $500,000 for a Deputy/FOP member killed in the line of duty; establishing a disability benefit trust for Deputy/FOP members and providing step pay increases for officers during the two year period of the agreement. As part of the agreement, the Deputy/FOP member will contribute 1.4 percent of their regular paycheck to the trust.

After the key elements were agreed upon, the two sides spent the last few months ironing out minor details of the agreement. “Although this is an agreement that was reached prior to my election, I have made it clear that the Deputies have waited long enough and I wanted to see this matter brought to conclusion as soon as possible,” said Culver. “The men and women of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office put their lives on the line every day in an increasingly more dangerous world. It is only right that we honor their commitment to the safety and well-being of our citizens by offering protection for their families if, God forbid, the worst happens”.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis applauded County Executive Bob Culver stating, “While County Executive Bob Culver unfortunately inherited this important piece of unfinished business, Bob recognized that it was critically important to the Deputies and their families that their daily sacrifices and contributions to the citizens of Wicomico County be rewarded. I commend our County Executive and members of the Wicomico County Council for their commitment to public safety”.

The signing ceremony for the agreement will be held on February 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 301, County Office Building, 125 North Division Street Salisbury. The event is open to the public and interested parties are encouraged to attend.

Sometimes A Little Nudging Can Go A Very Long Way: Back Street Update

This has been a very long day for me at Salisbury News. As many of you know, I posted an article about the feud between two property owners, (neighbors) early this morning that clearly went viral.

I had been talking to a friend of mine weeks ago about this issue and I said, I'll bet you a hundred bucks if I did a story about this situation I'd get the two owners to come together and work something out.

Well, today, after many hours of communication with these two owners I am extremely pleased to announce that the two have now worked out a deal to allow parking at the Paint Store property and no one is going to get towed any more. Mind you, I am expecting more details from each owner in the near future but I can tell you this, both men are incredible people who just never connected properly.

Your comments, (ALL OF YOU) played a HUGE role in settling a deal between all parties involved and we can't thank you enough.

We want the right kind of business environment in Salisbury and Wicomico County and these two men just proved that ANYTHING can be worked out. Get this, NEITHER person EVER said a bad thing about each other! While I played the middle man, I couldn't believe that this was such an issue between the two because each person was so kind.

And THIS is one of the key reasons I love what we do. Heck, this is as rewarding as reuniting a lost animal with their Family.

So my hat is tipped to Mark and Jerred for putting the customers and business community back on track and creating an example for  every one else to follow. More to come tomorrow.

It's been one hell of a week for Salisbury News and our viewers. We've all been able to enjoy multiple changes for the better and let me assure you, ALL of them couldn't have come about without YOU.

So give yourselves a pat on the back and know that Fredericksen NO LONGER has the power any longer to ramrod whatever he wants down your throats. You not only have a powerful voice but you now also have  a forum in which  you've now become a community of voices.

Brace Yourself: Justice Ginsburg Says US Ready to Accept Gay Marriage

Americans are prepared to accept a U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said, pointing to what she described as a sweeping change in attitudes toward gays.

In an interview Wednesday in the court’s oak-paneled east conference room, Ginsburg also said President Barack Obama’s health-care law, which is under attack in a case before the Supreme Court next month, will be a central part of his legacy.

The 81-year-old justice discussed the public’s increasing acceptance of gays against the backdrop of resistance by Alabama officials to a federal court order that took effect Monday and made it the 37th gay-marriage state. With the high court set to rule on the issue by June, she said it “would not take a large adjustment” for Americans should the justices say that gay marriage is a constitutional right.

Supporters Suggest Decision To Take Title Racially Motivated

There are accusations that racism was behind the decision by Little League International to strip the Jackie Robinson West team of the national title over cheating by the adults who run the team.

“We know that we’re champions, our parents know that we’re champions and the team’s parents know we’re champions and Chicago knows we’re champions,” said JRW catcher Brandon Green

Green said the players did nothing wrong as he stood with his mother, Rev. Jesse Jackson and Fr. Michael Pfleger at the headquarters of Rainbow Push.

Fr. Michael Pfleger called the decision racist.

“You need to reverse your decision and you need to do it now,” Fr. Pfleger said.

Rev. Jesse Jackson also suggested race was behind the decision.

“This is persecution,” Jackson said. “This is not right, it is unnecessary and it is not fair.”

He said the adults should be punished but not the kids.

With Job Creation Up, Workers Still Choose to Stay Home

The good news is that the economy is creating more jobs than ever. Just consider—257,000 more jobs in January, 329,000 in December, and 423,000 in November. The bad news is that the labor force participation rate—the percentage of people who are employed or who are looking for work—has barely moved, from 63 percent in January 2014 to 62.9 percent in January 2015.

These are levels equivalent to the late 1970s, before the movement of women into the labor force. This is worrying because more people at work means a stronger economy.

After most recessions, people gradually go back into the labor force as jobs become available. This time is different. When extended unemployment benefits ended in January 2014, many people, myself included, thought that labor force participation rates would start to rise. It hasn’t yet happened.

Wicomico Schools Announces Redirection of Redistricting Process; Information & Input Meetings Will Not Be Held

Based on input and questions already received from the community, Wicomico County Public Schools will set aside for now any discussion of school boundary changes for the 2015-2016 school year. The Redistricting Information & Input Meetings that had been scheduled for Feb. 12, 17 and 19 will not be held.
Four of the considerations became part of the redistricting conversation but do not involve changing school boundaries. These considerations remain in the plans for next school year. School system officials will meet with the schools involved and with those staff members, families and students to work out details for:
Bennett Middle: The new Bennett Middle School will open with the same student attendance area. In order to transport all BMS students without requiring additional buses, Bennett Middle’s school day is proposed to be 8:15 a.m.-3:15 p.m.
Middle school ESOL program: The plan is to have one center at Bennett Middle to serve the school’s approximately 50 students, and another center at Wicomico Middle to serve approximately 42 ESOL students from the other four middle schools, 20 of whom are in the Wicomico Middle walking area. This change would reduce transportation time and increase instructional time for most students.
Charles H. Chipman Elementary/Glen Avenue Elementary: Grade 2 would move to Glen Avenue, the school Chipman students currently begin attending in Grade 3, starting with the 2015-2016 school year. Glen Avenue has capacity for the additional students. Chipman would become a prekindergarten-grade 1 school with more room for prekindergarten classes, and the school would begin to transition to the Charles H. Chipman Early Learning School.
School system administrators and the Board of Education read and heard many comments, questions and concerns and concluded that the timing was not right for making boundary changes for the 2015-2016 school year. Many people suggested the school system proceed slowly with any changes. School officials heard the input and have responded.
The school system will continue to work with schools, families, staff members, and others in the community to explore possible solutions to the topics and issues that were part of the redistricting discussion, and to explore ways of balancing enrollment among all of Wicomico’s schools and making effective use of facilities. Both the active participation of the community and the detailed work of the Internal Redistricting Committee were invaluable in this process.
Input is welcome at any time at comments@wcboe.org or 410-677-5251.

Tom Brady faces $60,500 IRS bill for winning Super Bowl

Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady is facing a $60,500 bill from the IRS just for winning the game, according to a new report.

Americans for Tax Reform said he will have to pay $42,000 on his share of the $97,000 for playing in the championship, and another $18,500 for giving away the red Chevy Colorado pickup truck he won for being MVP to fellow player Malcolm Butler, who caught the game-winning interception.

They said Brady will have to pay about $13,000 in income tax on the prize, and then another $5,000 “gift tax” for doing a nice thing in giving Butler the keys.

“That's a $5,000 gift tax on top of a $13,500 income tax on the truck, for a combined federal tax hit of $18,500,” said ATR, headed by Washington tax foe Grover Norquist.

During subsequent processing, Tankard refused to submit to the breath test.

The deputy placed Tankard under arrest and transported him to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner.

The District Court Commissioner released Tankard on Personal Recognize.

Delmar School Redistricting

Hi Joe,

I was wondering if you could post about this issue. The community of Delmar is really upset. Most parents, like myself, bought homes in Delmar strictly because we want our children to go to the Delmar school district. We are feeling hopeless. Can you help spread the word. Maybe, if enough families are aware, we can prevent this awful proposition from going through. I've attached the website Delmar has created.

COP POINTS GUN AT 14-YO BOY PLAYING ON BALCONY, ‘ACCIDENTALLY’ PULLS TRIGGER, SHOOTS HIM

“Due to the weather and lighting conditions, it is not likely that the officer was able to determine how old the person was..."

A Baltimore County police officer shot a 14-year-old boy Monday night while moonlighting as an apartment complex security guard.

Police said two security guards were working off-duty at the Woodridge apartment complex who were investigating reports of people inside apartments that were under construction.

The officer who shot the teen told police that he saw someone come out on a balcony. He said he was pointing his weapon at the balcony, and it simply went off.

The officer “was pointing the weapon in the direction of the balcony” when “his weapon discharged accidentally,” the department said in a statement.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - A 37-year-old woman has died after deputies in northern Virginia used a Taser stun gun on her while she was in custody.

Natasha McKenna of Alexandria was taken off life support Sunday, five days after she was stunned at the Fairfax County jail, the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

McKenna was in the process of being transported from the Fairfax County jail to the Alexandria city jail Tuesday when deputies say she failed to comply with their commands and resisted them. A deputy then used a Taser to restrain her, sheriff's Lt. Steve Elbert said Monday.

Governor Larry Hogan Announces Legislation To Repeal “Rain Tax”

House Bill 481 Repeals Storm Water Management Mandate, Returns Control To Local Governments

ANNAPOLIS, MD –
Today, Governor Larry Hogan joined with County Executives, legislators, and local business leaders to announce House Bill 481, a bill that will repeal the storm water management mandate, more commonly known as the “Rain Tax.”

“Passing a state law that forces counties to raise taxes on their citizens against their will, is not the best way to address the issue,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Marylanders have made perfectly clear that further taxing struggling and already overtaxed Marylanders for the rain that falls on the roof of their homes was a mistake that needs to be corrected.”

The legislation reflects the governor’s opposition to this mandate on local governments and reaffirms his view that local authorities should have the autonomy to determine their own options for funding storm water management programs.

“Harford County will continue to meet our storm water responsibilities and goals through existing revenues and other means, such as public-private partnerships, without the uneven and unfair mandates of the rain tax,” said Harford County Executive Berry Glassman. “I believe most Maryland counties are similarly committed to achieving these goals through their own programs.”

House Bill 481 is very similar to Senator Brochin's [D, District 42] Senate Bill 36, which also seeks a repeal of the mandated tax on local governments for storm water management.

“The rain tax is less about cleaning up the Bay than it is about imposing another tax on our citizens, as Carroll County found out last year when the Attorney General threatened us with a $10,000 a day fine for not levying one,” said Delegate Haven Shoemaker.

“NFIB and our members thank Governor Hogan for making tax reduction one of his first and most important priorities. The rain tax has been a huge burden and puts financial strain on our state’s smallest employers,” said Jessica Cooper, State Director of the National Federation of Independent Business. “Most of NFIB’s members in the counties enforcing the rain tax have seen significant increases in their taxes due to the rain tax. From surveying our members, they have reported their taxes increasing as much as $4,600 due to the rain tax, with an average seeing an increase of $1,900 or 17% in their taxes.”

From the Owners of Back Street Grill

Joe, thanks so much for facilitating a resolution. We are both happy to have found common ground.

Just to be clear we buy all of our paint from PPG (Glidden) and will continue to do so because they are friendly people who give good service and they are good neighbors.

As business owners, we urge you to continue to patronize the paint store. The property owner was within his rights to tow and we respect that. We also ask our customers to leave Tommy, the tow driver out of this... we believe any legal job is a respectful one and we're sure that he has bills and family to take care of just like the rest of us.

And to the customers - we thank you all so much for your patronage.

Once again, we do not want this dispute to effect anyone's business or the property owner as we are all small businesses and need the support of our community.

Thanks to everyone for taking the high road in this matter,

The Reeves Family

Tavon White Sentenced To 12 Years In Federal Prison

The gang member who prosecutors say dealt drugs and impregnated four guards while incarcerated at a Baltimore jail was sentenced on Monday.

A federal judge sentenced Tavon "Bulldog" White to 12 years in federal prison for his role in the city jail corruption case. He got a reduction from a 20-year maximum sentence for cooperating.

White, a commander of the Black Guerilla Family, oversaw a contraband smuggling operation inside the Baltimore City Detention Center that grabbed headlines and resulted in a sweeping indictment of 44 people, including 27 corrections officers. Thirty-five of those charged pleaded guilty, including White; eight maintained their innocence and went to trial. A federal jury last week convicted five people, including two corrections officers, two inmates and a kitchen worker of racketeering.

Grammys 2015: Kanye West blasts Beck's album of the year win

Kanye West’s mock stage-rushing during Beck’s acceptance speech for album of the year at the Grammys initially seemed like a fun joke at his own expense. The last time West pulled a similar stunt, it was 2009, and he was protesting Taylor Swift's winning over Beyonce during the 2009 Video Music Awards.

But in remarks to E! after Sunday's telecast, it’s clear that West was deadly serious about believing that Beyonce was robbed by an undeserving Beck.

“I don’t even know what [Beck] said. I just know that, the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We aren’t going to play with them no more,” West told his somewhat stunned interviewers during E!’s post-show wrap-up. “Beck needs to respect artistry, he should have given his award to Beyonce. At this point, we tired of it. What happens is, when you keep on diminishing art, and not respecting the craft, and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration.”

GOP Bill Would Require Photo ID to Use Food Stamps

Several GOP lawmakers have proposed a new bill that would require photo identification to use food stamps.

Arguing that taxpayers lose $858 million a year on food stamp fraud, they say the bill will ensure that food stamp benefits actually belong to the person who is using them by requiring retailers to check the photo ID of a person every time they attempt to use the federal program.

One of the co-sponsors, Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-OK), joined Tucker Carlson on "Fox and Friends" this morning to explain his support of the bill.

"I think it's perfectly appropriate when the taxpayers are losing almost a billion dollars a year to fraud in the SNAP program - which is the food stamp program. I think it's perfectly appropriate to require a low hurdle like an ID," Bridenstine said.

Southern Poverty Law Center Places Ben Carson On ‘Extremist Watch List’

Ben Carson is receiving a lot of attention as a potential presidential candidate, but he’s now also getting noticed as an apparent “anti-gay” extremist.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which considers itself a civil rights advocacy group, recently placed the famed neurosurgeon on its “Extremist Watch List” — a list that mainly includes neo-Nazis and other white supremacists.

Carson was included for allegedly being “anti-gay.” The SPLC considers his opposition to gay marriage to be hateful and worthy of inclusion in the list.
