Meet The Robots That Will Build Your Next House

The U.S. residential construction industry employs 100's of thousands of people each year in various skilled trades that earn hourly pay rates ranging from minimum wage to $100 per hour, or more.

Per BLS statistics, the residential housing space employed over 1 million people at the height of the housing bubble and now accounts for nearly 750,000 jobs.

Of course, just like the auto industry, many of those jobs can be done at a fraction of the cost and with much greater precision by industrial robots. Moreover, those robots work inside a warehouse where they're immune from the negative consequences of weather and can work 365 days per year without compromising construction integrity.

FAKE NEWS: CNN SPECULATES RUSSIA PROBABLY COVERED UP INVOLVEMENT IN CHEMICAL ATTACK

Assad echoes Putin in saying attack was false flag set up by US
In a report Wednesday, CNN cited ‘anonymous sources’ to push a conspiracy theory that Russia covered up its communications regarding the chemical attack in Syria.

According to the network, an anonymous senior US official has claimed that the US intercepted communications between Syrian military officials which proves that Damascus was behind the attack in Idlib.

CNN then noted that evidence implicating Russia has not been unearthed, and speculated that the reason is probably because Russia is better at covering its tracks.

“The likelihood is the Russians are more careful in their communications to avoid being intercepted.” the CNN report reads.

The report states that US intelligence has communications “featuring Syrian military and chemical experts talking about preparations for the sarin attack in Idlib last week.”

Md. Senator Drafting Bill To Prevent Police From Removing Airline Customers

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — In the wake of the United Airlines debacle at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport last weekend, in which paying customer David Dao was forcibly removed from a flight, Maryland Senator Jim Rosapepe says he’s drafting legislation to keep the same thing from happening at Maryland’s Baltimore–Washington International Airport.

The bill piggybacks on a national push to protect passengers. This bill, specific to BWI, would ensure airlines can’t use local police simply to enforce their business interests.

Days after video of Dao being dragged of a flight went viral, sparking national outrage and launching a local investigation, Rosapepe promises he’ll fight to keep BWI passengers in their seats.

“I’m having legislation drafted to say that police at BWI Airport will not be allowed to drag ticketed passengers off a plane simply because an airline is overbooked,” said Rosapepe.

TRUMP SLAMS PRESS: “THE FAKE MEDIA HAS GOTTEN EVEN WORSE SINCE THE ELECTION”

"Every story is badly slanted."

President Trump took to Twitter Easter Monday and slammed the mainstream media, decrying that it has “gotten even worse since the election.”

Every story written by “the fake media” is “badly slanted,” Trump tweeted.

“The Fake Media (not Real Media) has gotten even worse since the election. Every story is badly slanted. We have to hold them to the truth!” the president posted.
It appears that the president was spurred to hit the media by coverage of a recent House special election in Kansas, where Republican Rob Estes defeated Democrat James Thompson by 7 percentage points.

Trump hit out at media hypocrisy, declaring that too much attention was given to it when it appeared it was close, but after Estes won, reports disappeared.

“The recent Kansas election (Congress) was a really big media event, until the Republicans won. Now they play the same game with Georgia-BAD!” Trump tweeted.

Investigation Shuts Down Firearm Burglary Ring

Six Indicted for Alleged Conspiracy to Commit
Thefts of Firearms, Rifles and Shotguns for Use in
Drug Trafficking and Violent Crimes

BALTIMORE, MD – Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh today announced the indictment of six individuals for allegedly conspiring to commit burglaries in order to steal firearms, rifles and shotguns.

The indictments and arrests come at the end of a yearlong investigation that was the product of collaboration between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Baltimore Field Division, the Baltimore Police Department and the Organized Crime Unit of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.

The indictments allege that over the course of two days in early August 2015, some of the defendants broke into a storage unit in the Park Heights area of Baltimore City, and stole approximately 60 firearms. These included several shotguns and semi-automatic assault rifles. The defendants subsequently sold, traded, and rented the stolen firearms to other individuals for use in the commission of drug trafficking offenses and violent crimes. In addition, the defendants kept many of the firearms, using them to commit several carjackings and armed robberies throughout the city of Baltimore.

Report: Staffer orchestrated assault on youth at Frederick County-based juvenile detention center

A former employee bribed two boys in a state-run youth detention center in Sabillasville to attack another boy, according to a quarterly report on state Department of Juvenile Services facilities.

The incident began Nov. 17 when a youth assaulted a staff member at the Victor Cullen Center, according to a fourth-quarter report and 2016 annual review released March 28 by the Juvenile Justice Monitoring Unit.

The next day, a staff member approached two boys in a hallway of the maximum-security detention center and allegedly offered to smuggle Chinese food into the facility for them if they beat up the boy involved in the previous day’s assault, the report states.

“The youth then entered a classroom and walked directly over to another youth who stood up and moved to the back of the classroom,” the report reads, detailing how the entire exchange was caught by security cameras. “Both youth then began assaulting the targeted youth.”

Upon arrival, the deputies met with a subject later identified as the son of the homeowner, Elizabeth Waybright, who was staying at this residence. According to the son, he uncovered what he recognized as a marijuana grow operation in the basement of the residence. and that when he confronted his mother, Elizabeth Waybright, and his sister Britani Elburn, they told him they were not getting rid of anything. Upon informing his mother and sister that he was contacting the Sheriff’s Office, Britani knocked his phone out of his hand before jumping on his back where she proceeded to punch and bite her brother. Salisbury Defense Manufacturer Expands Operations, Plans To Add 42 New Jobs

Manufacturing Support Industries Will Expand Its Operations in Salisbury to Increase Production

ANNAPOLIS, MD –
Manufacturing Support Industries, Inc. (MSI) a manufacturer of precision components for the defense industry, is expanding its operations in Salisbury. As part of a strategic affiliation with Craig Technologies in Seaford, Del., a leading manufacturer of precision ground plastic balls and custom injection molded parts, product lines are being integrated at MSI’s Salisbury facility, which will add 42 new jobs over the next three years.

“We have always been proud to produce quality components for the Department of Defense,” said MSI President Robert Correa. “These investments will allow us to continue this important work well into the future.”

“We are expanding the capabilities of MSI,” said Craig Technologies President Don Hollenbeck. “The integration of our tool and die facilities and our molding capabilities coupled with the machining capabilities of MSI will allow MSI to become more competitive.”

Since 1998, MSI has manufactured high-precision weaponry components for the military. The company provides services from initial fabrication to final assembly and testing. This is the third major manufacturing project for Salisbury in the past six months, following the announcements of RDI Wire & Cable Solutions and Toriod P & H expanding in the Eastern Shore’s largest city.

"It is exciting to see yet another manufacturer in Salisbury growing and adding jobs,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “This expansion, and the 42 new jobs it will create, is a win for the local community as we work to provide new and better opportunities for hardworking Marylanders.”

“These well-paying jobs are a valued asset for Wicomico County,” said County Executive Bob Culver. “As indicated by this expansion, we appreciate the confidence MSI is showing in Wicomico County.”

To assist with project costs, the Maryland Department of Commerce has approved a $100,000 conditional loan through the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund (MEDAAF). The Salisbury-Wicomico Economic Development Corporation will also provide an additional $100,000 loan. The company is also eligible for various tax credits including Maryland’s Job Creation Tax Credit.

“We are pleased to support the expansion of Manufacturing Support Industries, and welcome the new product line and new jobs,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “Manufacturing companies all over our state are continuing to grow and add jobs, and we are pleased to work with our local partners to ensure that these companies have the resources needed to thrive in Maryland.”

“Our economy in Salisbury continues to grow from our downtown to our industrial parks,” said Mayor of Salisbury Jacob Day. “We’re creating an environment where people want to be and businesses wish to invest and we welcome MSI’s expansion and the new jobs."

Harley-Davidson Said to Offer Rare Rebates to Shift Bike Backlog

Harley-Davidson Inc. has taken the rare step of offering rebates on its 2016 motorcycles to U.S. dealers as an incentive for them to shift a backlog that has restricted sales of its latest models, three dealers and two analysts said.

The unusual promotion, which the dealers expect to run until the end of April, is likely to weigh on the U.S. motorcycle maker's margins in the first half of the year, the analysts said.

Demand for Harley's motorcycles in the United States has slowed as its loyal baby boomer demographic ages and rivals such as Indian-motorcycle maker Polaris Industries Inc. and Japan's Honda Motor Co. offer competitive discounts.

Drug-related deaths overburden Maryland medical examiner's office

The opioid epidemic that has claimed so many lives in Maryland is overwhelming the state medical examiner's office.

The agency has exceeded national caseload standards — the number of autopsies a single pathologist should perform in a year — in each of the past four years. The office now risks losing its accreditation.

"Everyone continues to add on work hours and work faster and hopefully not take short cuts," said Dr. David R. Fowler, Maryland's chief medical examiner. "They absorb this extra load. But there is a point where they can't continue to add to that and expect the system will function."

The challenge is not limited to Maryland. The combination of additional and more complex cases is overwhelming medical examiners' offices across the country, particularly along the East Coast, leaving many on the verge of losing accreditation.

Washington Post: Reports of Unsatisfied Trump Voters Inaccurate

Reports that voters are wholly unsatisfied with President Donald Trump aren't quite accurate, the Washington Post reports.

The Post story dials in on a New York Times article titled, "Trump Voters in a Swing District Wonder When the 'Winning' Will Start," which explores how voters from a key congressional district in Pennsylvania are unhappy they picked Trump. But it's not an accurate microcosm, argues the Post.

It's mostly Democrats who think Trump has underperformed according to two recent polls. A poll conducted by the Pew Research Center shows 32 percent of Democrats say Trump has done worse than expected as President while 38 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents say he has performed better.

Another poll released Monday by Gallup said when people were asked whether the president kept his promises, Trump's numbers declined from 62 percent to 45 percent. While percentages among Republicans declined, too, from 92 percent to 81 percent, the figure was still high.

State Police Make Arrest In Somerset County HomicideApril 18, 2017

(Salisbury, MD) – Maryland State Police homicide investigators arrested a Wicomico County man in connection with the murder of Walter Whitehead in Somerset County.

The accused is identified as Marquel Brumskin, aka ‘Flat’, 26, of Salisbury. Police located Brumskin at a residence in Salisbury last night at 8:00 p.m. He was apprehended without incident. Brumskin is charged with first and second degree murder, first and second degree assault, use of a handgun in the commission of a felony and reckless endangerment. He was transported to the District Court Commissioner in Somerset County for his initial appearance.

The victim, Walter Whitehead, 22, of Salisbury, Maryland was found dead in the backyard of a residence in the 32,000 block of Flower Hill Church Road in Eden on the morning of Friday, April 14, 2017. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner notified State Police investigators that Whitehead’s death was caused by gunshot wounds. The manner of his death was determined to be homicide.

Police believe Brumskin used to live in the 32,000 block of Flower Hill Church Road in a home, where Whitehead’s body was found in the backyard, about five houses down. Brumskin’s home is believed to have been vacant at the time of the murder. Further investigation indicates Brumskin and Whitehead were involved in an alleged altercation earlier in the afternoon of the murder. Based on additional information received, evidence collected, and consultation with the Somerset County State’s Attorney, Brumksin was charged with the murder of Walter Whitehead.

Shortly before 7:00 a.m. last Friday, the Princess Anne Barrack received a 9-1-1 call from a neighbor who observed the victim’s body lying in the backyard of a neighboring residence. Troopers from the barrack arrived on scene and located him deceased at the scene.

Investigators from the Criminal Enforcement Division and Maryland State Police Homicide Unit continue to actively investigate this case. Police do not believe this was a random act of violence.

If anyone has information relevant to this case, callers are urged to contact Trooper First Class Sears at Salisbury Barrack at 410-749-3101. Callers may remain confidential.

First Woman To Officially Complete Boston Marathon Runs Again 50 Years Later

An official told Kathrine Switzer to “get the hell out” of the race in 1967. Nevertheless, she persisted.

Kathrine Switzer smashed gender barriers 50 years ago when she became the first woman to officially complete the Boston Marathon. But the most iconic part of this record-breaking endeavor didn’t happen at the finish line.

Switzer, then 20, donned lipstick and earrings when she showed up to the 1967 Boston Marathon as the race’s first official female competitor. Race organizers had unknowingly granted her this historic title because she used her initials, K.V., to register for the traditionally all-male event ― a move she has said wasn’t intentionally misleading.

As she made her way to the starting line, then-boyfriend Tom Miller encouraged her to wipe off her lipstick, worried she might provoke race officials. But Switzer refused.

She had only run a couple of miles before the marathon’s director, Jock Semple, took notice of her. He charged at Switzer and attempted to forcibly remove her bib marked with the number 261.

“A big man, a huge man, with bared teeth was set to pounce, and before I could react he grabbed my shoulder and flung me back, screaming, ‘Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers!’” Switzer wrote in her 2007 memoir.

NY Times Editorial Board Really Wants President Trump To Stop Being Mean To North Korea

On the “straight” news pages, the NY Times has called the North Korea situation a “slow motion Cuban missile crisis.” On the opinion pages, the Editorial Board almost seems to be taking North Korea’s side in order to Bash Trump, their favorite game

President Trump’s Loose Talk on North Korea

As a candidate, Donald Trump seemed to pay no more attention to North Korea’s accelerating nuclear weapons program, which his predecessor has warned is America’s most urgent threat,…

Actually, Obama said that ‘climate change’ was America’s, and the world’s, most urgent issue. But, in all due respect, Obama had the right idea in mostly ignoring North Korea’s, or, to be specific, Kim Jong-un’s, provocations. Typically, when the North Korean leaders became frisky and bombastic, the United States, the U.N., and other nations gave them stuff. Like when Bill Clinton gave them a nuclear reactor. Of course, NK tested lots of nuclear bombs and long range missiles during Obama’s time. But, they would anyhow. Obama didn’t give them anything for those provocations.

…than he did to other complex foreign policy issues. Now he is paying attention, but not in a helpful way. His intemperate talk is adding to regional tensions, unnerving allies and likely reinforcing North Korea’s longstanding fear that it could one day be attacked by America — the very reason North Korea invested in a nuclear arsenal in the first place.

It would be risky for Mr. Trump to let overconfidence and bombast, expressed in tweets and public statements, box him into some kind of showdown with the North’s ruthless leader, Kim Jong-un, who has displayed similarly macho traits. South Korea, Japan and even Russia have urged both sides to avoid a devastating miscalculation.

Washington State student destroys pro-life display because it made him ‘angry’

A student repeatedly destroyed a pro-life display at Washington State University last week because it made him “angry.”

Keaton Aspell said he left class Wednesday morning and was disgusted to find a “Cemetery for the Innocent” — 300 pink crosses representing 100 children aborted per day — sticking out of a quad.

“I was like, ‘this is disgusting,’” Mr. Aspell told campus newspaper the Daily Evergreen. “I don’t think it creates any type of unity. I think it just causes divisiveness and they are just pushing their religious agenda, and it really made me angry.”

Students for Life set the display back up, but Mr. Aspell later returned to take it down again.

Nicole Manzione, a member of the pro-life chapter, said she was forced to call campus police.

“I called the police when the angry student came back and claimed that he had taken them down the first time and was angry that he had to take them down again,” Ms. Manzione told the Evergreen. “We tried to have a good conversation with him, calm and civil, and he just kept taking them down no matter what we said.”

College Snowflakes: The American Flag is ‘Triggering,’ Offensive – Take It Down!

Liberals have invented a lot of imaginary “triggers”, which serve no other purpose than to effectively erase things they don’t like from the world. This is most common on college campuses, where college snowflakes yell “trigger” whenever they’re confronted with something that they don’t like. But now it’s gone so far as claiming that the American flag, of all things, is triggering and offensive.

Previously, there was a university bylaw requiring that the American flag be present during UC Davis Student Senate meetings. That was evidently unacceptable, because “the concept of United States of America and patriotism is different for every individual”. Senate Bill 76 was introduced by Jose Meneses, a naturalized citizen, and reads, “It shall not be compulsory for the flag of the United State of America to be displayed at ASUCD Senate meetings.”

“It should be at the discretion of the Senate whether presenting the flag is presently necessary,” it continues. “Considering that the flag is seldom present at Senate meetings, it should not be mandated by the Bylaws as a codified practice.”

A UC Davis spokesperson explained that this was not an administrative choice, but one made by students alone. “This a Student Senate bill that the Student Senate [voted] on,” the spokesperson said. But not everyone is happy about the decision.

True the Vote Wins BIG Against the IRS!

Leftist Billionaire Tom Steyer Outspends Soros

Democrats tell us that we must hate the rich. Yet they are the rich:

Most people who pay attention to politics assume that George Soros is the largest financier of leftist election candidates. While he may have the largest non-profit funding network, Soros is not the person who spent the most directly helping candidates through superPACs or other organizations in 2016. That person is Tom Steyer, a former hedge fund executive who made his fortune in the fossil fuel industry. TheWashington Post reported Steyer spent $66.3 million helping Democrats in the 2016 cycle, and the Washington Times reports that the final spend was north of $85 million.

How much did legendary leftist George Soros spend in 2016? A meager $17.5 million.

Steyer specializes in environmoonbattery:

Steyer has been involved in not only funding left-wing candidates, but also many of the protests you’ve seen over the last few years regarding the environment.

He uses his money to save the climate, which according to leftist dogma is imperiled by the fossil fuels that are the source of his wealth. There are levels of hypocrisy that only the liberal elite can attain.

People Noticed Something VERY Odd About North Korea’s Military Parade This Weekend

I have to say, after reviewing the pics, that North Korea’s display of military power looks at least partially bogus. The one pic showing a missile with the nose pointing up is damning. And if you look closely, it almost appears as if they used papier-mache to make them. Jennifer Griffin of Fox News has pointed out before that North Korea’s parades are fake and it certainly looks as if that is the case here.

You might ask yourself why would they would do that? Several things come to mind. They might not want their actual weapons out where they could be hit by enemies. They might not have as many as they claim. Either one of those are solid possibilities here. I would go with the first one. Don’t fool yourselves… they definitely have functional weapons. Our intelligence confirms it and it is why we are taking the threat very seriously. I just heard that Hawaii is calling for a reinforcement to their defenses because of North Korea.

Subject: Student Newspaper Threatens Students Who Do Not Conform to Progressive Values

The editors of The Wellesley News, the student newspaper of Wellesley College threatened their peers who refuse to conform to the campus’ progressive orthodoxy, in a column that was published this week.

Students at the all-female Wellesley College, the alma mater of both Hillary Clinton and Madeline Albright, are threatening their peers who refuse to tow the progressive line in a recently published column in the student newspaper.

As a part of a wider conversation on hate speech on campus, the student editors of The Wellesley News penned a column ironically titled “Free Speech is Not Violated At Wellesley,” that claims that students who “refuse to adapt their beliefs” will be treated with hostility by their peers.

This being said, if people are given the resources to learn and either continue to speak hate speech or refuse to adapt their beliefs, then hostility may be warranted. If people continue to support racist politicians or pay for speakers that prop up speech that will lead to the harm of others, then it is critical to take the appropriate measures to hold them accountable for their actions.

Make Pepsi Political Again

The solution to a failed politicized marketing campaign? Politicize your brand even more.

Pepsi's unintentionally brilliant marketing campaign with Kendall Jenner was derided by leftists as a for-profit appropriation, namely of #Resist and #BlackLivesMatter.

It's more hype than Pepsi has gotten in ages. As the furor has died down, thought leaders are questioning how the brand can recover with deeply scarred consumers.

Two liberal copywriters have a solution to the Kendall Jenner ad controversy: go all in.

In The 1920s, A Community Conspired To Kill Native Americans For Their Oil Money

Generations ago, the American Indian Osage tribe was compelled to move. Not for the first time, white settlers pushed them off their land in the 1800s. They made their new home in a rocky, infertile area in northeast Oklahoma in hopes that settlers would finally leave them alone.

As it turned out, the land they had chosen was rich in oil, and in the early 20th century, members of the tribe became spectacularly wealthy. They bought cars and built mansions; they made so much oil money that the government began appointing white guardians to "help" them spend it.

And then Osage members started turning up dead.

In his new book, Killers of the Flower Moon, David Grann describes how white people in the area conspired to kill Osage members in order steal their oil wealth, which could only be passed on through inheritance. "This was a culture of complicity," he says, "and it was allowed to go on for so long because so many people were part of the plot. You had lawmen, you had prosecutors, you had the reporters who wouldn't cover it. You had oilmen who wouldn't speak out. You had morticians who would cover up the murders when they buried the body. You had doctors who helped give poison to people."

Stem Cells for Knees: Promising Treatment or Hoax?

At 55, George Chung of Los Angeles could keep up with skiers decades younger, taking on difficult slopes for hours and hours. "Skiing was my passion," he says.

Then the pain started, and the bad news. He had severe osteoarthritis, the ''wear-and-tear'' type, in both knees. Doctors suggested surgery, but he chose instead an investigational treatment -- injections of stem cells. Two months after the first treatment, he was out of pain. "I had been in pain of various degrees for 6 years," he says.

Now, nine treatments and 3 years later, he is back to intense skiing. Last year, he also took up long-distance cycling, completed five double-century cycling rides, and earned the prestigious California Triple Crown cycling award.

Treatments with stem cells -- which can grow into different types of cells -- are booming in the U.S., with an estimated 500 or more clinics in operation. Some clinics offer treatment for conditions ranging from autism to multiple sclerosis to erectile dysfunction, often without scientific evidence to support how well they work.

Home-Based Drug Treatment Program Costs Less And Works

Hannah Berkowitz is 20 years old. When she was a senior in high school her life flew off the rails.

She was getting high on whatever drugs she could get her hands on. She was suicidal. Berkowitz moved into a therapeutic boarding school to get sober, but could only stay sober while she was on campus during the week.

"I'd come home and try to stay sober really hard — really, really hard," says Berkowitz. "Sometimes I'd make it through the weekend, and sometimes I just couldn't make it. It was white-knuckling it, just holding on."

The transition back home always triggered a relapse for Berkowitz.

"I thought it was just my fault and there was no hope," she says.

No hope — but Berkowitz did have luck. She had private health insurance and she lived in Connecticut, where a startup company, Aware Recovery Care, had begun treating clients in the very environment where Hannah was struggling to stay sober: her home.

Poll: Americans Underestimate How Many People Pay Zero Income Taxes

Back in 2012, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign suffered a blow when a tape was leaked of him grousing that 47 percent of Americans don't pay federal income tax. It was one of the biggest gaffes of the presidential campaign, but a new poll conducted by Ipsos for NPR suggests that many Americans forgot it.

The way Romney characterized those who don't pay federal income taxes is what got him in trouble, but the figure was roughly true. The new poll, however, shows that a majority think that the share of Americans paying no federal income tax is far lower.

The poll gave respondents four options — 39 percent said that only 11 percent of Americans pay zero or negative income tax, and 31 percent said that only 27 percent pay zero or negative income tax. Only 21 percent got it right — right now, around 45 percent pay no federal income tax.

The poll, released the day before Americans' taxes are due, delved into what Americans know and what they believe is wrong with the U.S. tax code — and what they know is limited and at times contradictory. But this isn't just about pointing out what Americans know and don't know. Rather, there could be important policy implications to Americans' misperceptions about the tax system. For example, this question dovetails with questions about what people think the lowest-income Americans' tax rate should be.

Americans underestimate the share of Americans who don't pay federal income taxes

Given four choices of how many Americans pay zero or negative federal income taxes (11, 27, 45, or 63 percent), fully 70 percent of poll respondents chose the options underthe correct answer, which was 45 percent. Some of these people simply have no taxable income, and others get money back as a result of refundable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. (Of course, these people might pay other taxes, like payroll taxes, as well as whatever sales and property taxes their states impose.)

Md. Gen. Assembly All-Male Panel Made Decision On Rape Legislation

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — In a decision made by an all-male committee, Md. Gen Assembly did not pass legislation that would allow rape victims to terminate the parental rights of their rapist.

The legislation, sponsored by Delegate Kathless Dumais, failed on the last day of General Assembly.

Both the House and Senate passed bills that made it through both chambers, and the committee was of three delegates and three senators was called together to reconcile differences between the two bills. The meeting was set for the last day of General Assembly, but was not passed because of the committee ran out of time.

Is The Deep State Creating Another "Crash Of 1929"?

In his speech above, future Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke acknowledged that, by raising interest rates, the Fed triggered the stock market crash of 1929, which heralded in the Great Depression.

Yet, in her speech above, Fed Chair Janet Yellen announced that “it makes sense” for the Fed to raise interest rates “a few times a year.” This is a concern, as economic conditions are similar to those in 1929, and a rise in interest rates may have the same effect as it did then.

So let’s back up a bit and have a look at what happened in 1929. In the run-up to the 1929 crash, the Federal Reserve raised rates to 6%, ostensibly to “limit speculation in securities markets.” As history shows, this sent economic activity south rather quickly. Countless investors, large and small, who had bought stocks on margin, would be unable to pay increased interest rates and would be forced to default. (It’s important to understand that the actual default was not necessary to crash markets. The knowledge that investors would be in trouble was sufficient to send the markets into a tailspin.)

Mister Bernanke was quite clear in 2002 when he stated that the Fed would not make the same mistake again that it made in 1929, yet, then, as now, there’s been a surprise victory by a Republican candidate for president. Then, as now, a wealthy man who had never held elective office was unexpectedly in the catbird seat and had the potential to endanger the control of the political class, at a time when that political class had been complicit in damaging the system by creating massive debt.

Sean Spicer Briefs Press On Latest North Korea Developments

In a relatively short daily press briefing, Sean Spicer took a barrage of questions on everything from North Korea to Trump's taxes and White House visitor logs but largely just repeated official administration policies on the issues.

North Korea - Repeating Trump's previous position, Spicer noted that the White House will not define any sort of 'red lines' with regards to North Korean provacations but confirmed that all options remain on the table. As of now, Spicer indicated that the White House continues to pursue active negotiations with President Xi of China to exert maximum, non-military pressure on North Korea which includes China's recent decision to halt coal imports.

ACT UP At 30: Reinvigorated For Trump Fight

Donald Trump's presidency is less than three months old, but in that time there have been massive turnouts for the Women's March and for Tax Day protests in cities across the country demanding that Trump release his returns. This coming Saturday, on Earth Day, scores of March for Science protests are expected.

Helping to guide these actions are veteran activists with the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power — better known as ACT UP. Thirty years after the coalition's founding, some seasoned activists are dusting off their bullhorns and updating their direct-action playbooks to tap into the new wave of activism energized by opposition to Trump's policies.

Founded in 1987, ACT UP never settled for trying to push change quietly or behind the scenes.

It was loud, demanding and in-your-face with telegenic direct action, a protest that got serious attention and, occasionally, laughs.

The Trump Reflation Fantasy Ends on Day 100

In honor of the Donald’s “Mother of All Bomb” (MOAB) attack on the Hindu Kush mountains Thursday, let me introduce MOAD.

I’m referring to the “Mother of All Debt” crises, of course. The opening round is coming when Washington goes into shutdown mode on April 28, which happens to be Day 100 of the Donald’s reign.

In theory, this should be just a routine extension of the fiscal year (FY) 2017 continuing resolution (CR) by which Congress is funding the $1.1 trillion compartment of government which is appropriated annually.

The remaining $3 trillion per year of entitlements and debt service is on automatic pilot, but the truth is Washington can’t agree on what to do about either component — except to keeping on borrowing to pay the bills.

Chrysalis amphitheater to open as first new structure at Merriweather Park

As the luminous green shell of the new Chrysalis amphitheater comes into view amid the towering poplars high above South Entrance Road in Columbia, it's impossible not to be intrigued.

The $6.6 million structure in Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods — which will be dedicated at a public ceremony on Earth Day, April 22 — has a ridged, undulating surface covered with 4,000 aluminum shingles, and its tubular steel ribs curve around a central arch and eight asymmetrical openings like the loops of a fingerprint.

Observers can easily forget that they're looking at a high-performance stage on par with the critically acclaimed Merriweather Post Pavilion, which lies just 200 yards away.

But the Chrysalis, designed by New York architect and artist Marc Fornes to be one of a kind, is also a park pavilion accessible to visitors by day and a lighted public sculpture by night.
